"We wanted plantation shutters and called Coastal Blinds & Shades. Justice was incredibly knowledgeable about the blinds and helped us pick which design and color best matched our home. She was incredibly knowledgeable and knew what looked good. Justice and Ryan came to install them, and we could not be happier!!! They are gorgeous! Simply gorgeous! They also made a custom Roman blind for our kitchen window, and Justice helped pick the fabric that would look best. I highly recommend! They are absolutely the best!"

Customers say: Quick response

"Don and Clay replaced several doors in our home, including exterior French doors and some unexpected repairs due to water damage when the old ones were taken out. They were extremely communicative, helping us understand all our options from start to finish, and worked professionally and very quickly. The work is beautiful, well-done, and we couldn't be happier! Will definitely call on them again for future work."

"We hired Brian to fix our leaky windows. We weren't sure it could even be done. But he improvised something using weatherstripping, and our home is nice and warm now as the wind howls outside at 20 degrees. He worked quickly and kept us informed every step of the way. We are extremely pleased."

"Brendan did a terrific job.I needed help with my outside lighting and he fixed the problem and replaced all of the bulbs. I also needed to have a screen door repaired and reframed. He did both of those things. We have also discussed future projects that will take place in the Fall. He is polite, respectful, and knowledgeable. A pleasure to work with and for me to learn from. My first experience with Angi but won't be my last."

Window Shutters questions, answered by experts

The most popular estate shutter brands include Hunter Douglas, Budget Blinds®, and Graber®. Hunter Douglas shutters cost $20 to $26 per square foot and include high-quality hardwood and faux wood options. Budget Blinds shutters cost $20 to $24 per square foot, depending on if you choose natural wood or another material. Depending on the material, Graber shutters range from $18 to $24 per square foot.

Shutters are still very common in Southern, farmhouse, and traditional-style homes, especially those in warm climates who can benefit from the increased efficiency. While modern homes and designs tend to shy away from shutters, shutters are a timeless design style that will likely be around for decades to come.

Not all windows are suitable for shutters, as certain styles can prevent them from functioning correctly. It's best to avoid installing shutters on bay windows, picture windows, dormer windows, and double-mulled windows. Shutters are better suited for large, full-size standard windows or French doors.

Additionally, consider the room's lighting needs. Since shutters effectively block light, they are an excellent choice for rooms where you want more darkness and privacy, such as a master bedroom or a main living room. For window types that are not ideal for functional shutters, some homeowners choose to install fixed (non-functional) shutters to maintain a consistent look across the home.

The average shutter is designed to last 20 to 25 years. Proper maintenance for the type of shutters you have is essential for helping them reach their full potential.

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.
