Chalk paint can be applied without sanding first. Keep in mind that while there are a lot of chalk paint color options available, there aren’t as many choices as latex or oil-based paint.

You can also learn how to paint furniture without sanding using a liquid deglosser, sometimes referred to as liquid sandpaper. If it rains after you paint your fence, you may need to apply another coat of paint after the fence thoroughly dries. This will ensure a good seal if the rain weakened any areas of the paint. However, if your paint had enough time to dry thoroughly before it rained, you should have no problem.

You’ll want to use a sprayer to paint your garage door, especially if the door has panels and other details. A sprayer can get those hard-to-reach places much easier than cutting in with a brush or trying to roll the paint. Once you get comfortable using a sprayer, you’re more likely to get a smooth, professional-looking finish. However, a paint roller will also work if you’ve got a flat garage door or if you don’t have access to a sprayer.

Yes, you can paint over already painted metal, but—before painting—you’ll want to use sandpaper on the area to achieve a rough surface. This helps prevent the paint from peeling or flaking. Remove damaged paint with 120-grit sandpaper. If the paint is in good condition, use 240-grit sandpaper. Brush off any dust before applying the primer.
