"This is a terrific landscaping company. Work included removal of huge ice-damaged shrub, transplanting of an 8-foot tall Burning Bush, total refurbishing of two flower beds and construction of flower bed wood boxes and installation of a split-rail fence. All well-done. Great job with cleanup and disposal of removed shrubs. Bob and his team are very knowledgeable, skilled and easy to work with. They accomplished the Burning Bush transplantation when I wondered if or how it could be done. A top-notch outfit."

"I put what I was looking for into Angi. Three professionals were recommended. Out of the three, Issac contacted me the same day, whereas the others did not respond. Issac came that same week and gave us an estimate. We were looking to have a flower bed planted asap. Isaac came less than a week later to to the job. While you can leave roots in the ground, if you don’t want the shrub to regrow again over time, it’s best not to leave any roots behind. Ensure you remove as much of the shrub as possible, including the root ball and any main roots you can see, to prevent new growth. Some gardeners opt for using a chemical treatment to prevent the stump from growing back, but this can kill beneficial microorganisms living in your soil.

While there are over 400,000 different flowering plants worldwide, there are five main types of flowers. These flower types are based on their lifecycles, giving each type a unique personality. These types are:

  • Annuals, which complete their entire life cycle within a single growing season. 

  • Perennials, which the tops die off in the winter but regrow in spring. 

  • Biennials, which complete their entire life cycle within two years.

  • Hybrids, which exhibit either annual or perennial behaviors depending on location

  • Flowering shrubs, which are small to medium-sized perennial woody plants, such as shrubs or evergreens.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include: 

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

Hedge plants are available in almost every size, from seedlings to fully mature, six-foot-tall shrubs. Planting smaller plants is much easier and more cost-effective. However, it can take years for the plants to reach maturity and create a full hedge. Garden centers and specialty retailers sometimes offer three to four-foot wide plants that you can simply plant next to each other for an instant full hedge.

You may need to lay sod on the areas you dug up once you get the okay from the contractor. It will take about 30 to 45 days for the sod to take root. Consult a local sod installer to get an accurate estimate of the timeline of your specific yard-enhancement project.
