Brian walked us through every step of the process and kept us in the loop if any surprises arose. He answered any and all questions we had, and we had a lot! Brian was also great at being transparent about supply costs. The decks he rebuilt are amazing and beyond solid! One of the most important things to us was his professionalism. We’ve had a number of contractors do work for us over the years that did below average work and a few that my wife did not feel comfortable around. It takes about one to three days for a two-person crew to lay 800 to 1,000 square feet of flooring daily. Remember that removal of existing flooring and additional prep work is considered during this time, and it’s likely that you won’t be able to pass through the room easily. In addition, you can expect lots of hammering and other noise from power tools during installation, so it’s best to plan accordingly.

It’s not a good idea to lay tile and grout on the same day. The adhesive or thin-set that sticks the tiles to the surface needs plenty of time to dry before you can grout. Wait for 24 to 48 hours, depending on moisture levels in the space. The tiles can become misaligned and more prone to damage if you don’t wait.

You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire. 

Grouting hearth tiles is one of the most important steps. It seals the tiles so heat doesn’t transfer under the tiles so easily, which can be dangerous. For this reason, heat-resistant grout is a must. Grout also prevents dust, dirt, and any other material from gathering between your tiles. If this happens and those buildups are flammable, a fire could start between the tiles. 

Yes, you can tile over tile. However, the original tiling job must be clean, flat, and free of damage, such as mold or mildew. Removing existing tiles is time-consuming and expensive, so it might make sense to skip this step.

Remember that when you tile over an existing layer, your walls or floor will get that much taller, so it might not work, depending on your door height.
