"We called late on a Saturday not sure what the problem with our toilet was beyond the classic “it won’t flush the water down.” Tamara was able to walk me through the troubleshooting process to determine if they were the right company to help me, in other words was my issue drain related or more of a toilet hardware/plumbing issue. Once we determined it was the drain she was able to give me an estimate and get someone to come out. Less than an hour later the technician called to let me know he was on the way. Once he arrived he did some more troubleshooting and quickly determined what was causing the issue and resolved it. There was no mess, in fact he left the bathroom cleaner than he found it. Total cost came in under the estimate and now my toilet works better than it ever has. Thank you Ecoclean for your prompt and professional service."

Great communication throughout project. Extra care to make sure I was satisfied at every step. Can't recommend enough."

"Nate communicated with me quickly when I posted my job to fix an outdoor spigot and replace a toilet. He had availability right away, but it turned out that I didn't need him for several weeks. He was able to do the job when I needed him at a very fair price, managed the job well & left things cleaner than he found them. His business is fairly new, but he is a Master Plumber with a lot of professional experience and a very nice guy. We all need a dependable plumber on call, and I've found mine. Hope you'll give him a call on your next job!"

"They were awesome! They cleared the drain in less than 1/2 hour. They will clean they were professional and they were honest! We had another plumber came in and said that the drain could not be cleared but that it would have to be replaced at a cost of $2,000. I seen your citizens it is so wonderful to find a company that is honest!"

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

The normal water level in a toilet bowl is about halfway full. The water should sit above the P trap drain because this creates a seal and suction. When you flush the toilet, the suction keeps sewer gases from entering your house through your toilet. Anytime the water level is higher or lower than half full, you need to make adjustments or replace broken parts.

A standard toilet flange should fit snugly into the outflow pipe and sit level with the subfloor. Installing a new one without first removing the old one will make it impossible to form a seal and keep the toilet bowl bolted securely in place.

However, if you’re dealing with leakage or wobbling because you’ve installed a new type of bathroom tile (making the floor taller), you may be able to avoid fully replacing the flange by opting for a toilet flange extender. Extenders typically come in kits for easy DIY installation, fit over the existing flange, and bring the drain connection higher.

In most cases, it’s better to repair a toilet than to replace it. Fixing issues like low water levels, running water, and flushing problems is less expensive than buying a new unit. Start thinking about replacement if the toilet is cracked, using excessive amounts of water, or is over 15 years old. Newer models are more water-efficient and clog less often than older models.

The cost depends on the parts, labor, extent of damage, and whether extensive plumbing modifications are required. Typical repairs cost $150-$300.
