Small Appliance Repair questions, answered by experts

In general, yes, it's worth repairing an appliance over replacing it. If the repair will give you more years of reliable service from the oven and the repair costs less than buying a comparable new model, then yes, get it repaired. If, on the other hand, the oven is reaching the end of its life and needs a costly repair, you're likely better off buying a new oven.

Appliance installation costs around $200 on average, and most installations total between $75 and $600. Some cost factors to consider that can increase your price toward the higher end of that range include the following:

  • You need to pay for long-distance delivery.

  • Your installers need to maneuver up or down stairs or around tight corners.

  • Your appliance needs to be connected to a natural gas line or water line.

  • Your appliance requires extra parts for a proper connection, like an ice maker hook-up kit.

  • Your appliance is oversized.

The cost to have a microwave vent installed starts around $150, but may exceed $300 if you have to cut through cabinets or install a new line to your ductwork. This is another reason tackling the project DIY can totally be worth it from a financial standpoint if you're willing to do the labor yourself.

In most cases, it’s worth hiring a professional installer to place and connect your appliances. Appliances like a washer and dryer are heavy and bulky, so they can be dangerous and challenging to maneuver into your home, especially if you have to move up or down stairs. Some appliance manufacturers might void your warranty or portions of it if your appliance is installed incorrectly, which is more likely to happen with a DIY installation. Additionally, any appliances requiring connections to gas or water lines should only be handled by professional installers for safety reasons.

Most repairs take 1-3 hours, though complex electrical or gas issues may require additional time.
