In 2-3 years I will need to have the current deck replaced. If this company is still in business I will reach out to them first for an estimate. If you don’t put gravel under concrete, the concrete can crack, sink, bow, or crumble. Even the concrete forming process will not go as smoothly if you are working directly on the soil or bare bedrock. The lack of a proper gravel layer can also lead to drainage issues below your slab, leading to water issues throughout your lawn and around your foundation.

The International Building Code requires individual step risers in a residential staircase to measure between 4 and 7-3/4 inches and the maximum rise of a staircase not to exceed 12 feet between landings. Individual step treads can’t be less than 10 inches deep.

It depends on your priorities. Concrete is more affordable and faster to install, but pavers offer better drainage, are easier to repair, and can create a more high-end look. If budget and speed matter most, go with concrete. If you want style and flexibility, pavers are the better bet.

Standard residential stair treads need to be at least 1 inch thick. Open staircases without risers must be at least 1-1/2 inches thick. 

In most cases, you’ll want your patio to be 4 inches thick, although you should add reinforcement and increase the thickness up to around 8 inches if you want it to support heavier loads and resist cracking more readily. Although thicker slabs will cost more, you’ll start seeing diminishing returns at around 6 inches.
