"It is a waste of money. The great majority of people are not going to find any value out of the service. If you need design consultation, you need a full service consultation. If you already have knowledge and experience, and you just need to get a few ideas, then you don't need to pay for that. You can just get a magazine or a book since you already have the knowledge of basic designs in your head or a little bit of experience. To have someone call you and give you information over the phone, you are not getting the personal service that you need. You may as well take the money $49 and apply it to something else like getting someone else to come out and give you the service that you need. Because, you are not getting much, you are not getting anything at all. They are going to have you do the work. After talking to them and I was talking to other home designers, I found out that that was a waste of time and waste of money. I gave them a C because they didn't fail at what they do but they don't offer any value for what they do. There's not much value to it. The cost was fair. They didn't do a terrible job and the cost isn't terrible, it was only $49. It just has a very low value. For responsiveness I gave them a B because they will answer your phone and answer your emails."

"I originally asked for my sofa and love seat to be cleaned and thats all I was expecting but I ended up being so pleased with my furniture I had Ryan clean my living room carpeting too. My sofa was the worst of all when they got there Ryan explained a basic steam clean was not going to do the best job, you see my sofa has never been cleaned is about 10 years old and I have a dog that sometimes peed on it to mark his territory. My sofa used to be a light khaki color but after years of abuse was black in some spots that I could never get clean with spot remover. They did a deep scrub on the sofa and a deodorizer that made my whole house smell fresh and the great thing it was safe to use around my dog. After they were done my sofa looked brand new and I couldn't resist getting my carpeting done, and it all came with a FREE warranty so I will be calling on them again in November to get my home ready for the holidays!

"I was in a bind, needing someone to clean my house within the next few days, as I was going in the hospital for surgery. I had hired another Home Advisor pro to clean my house and they did not call me or show up on the scheduled day. I then called the next person on the list. They came out but the estimate was way too high for the scope of the project. I was just about to give up when the owner of Machado Carpet services and house cleaning called me to follow up on my inquiry. Jose and Vilma came to my home that very evening to meet with me and my husband. I hired them on the spot. They are both very nice, down to earth, trustworthy, professional and very reasonably priced. Jose is always available to speak to customers on the phone and Vilma is wonderful. She arrives as scheduled bringing all necessary supplies and is more than happy to use yours if preferred. She works hard, completes the job as discussed and desired and is pleasant and enjoyable to be with. Her husband Jose is also professional and very nice. When I need carpet installation in the future he will be my guy. I am very lucky that Jose reached out to me."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

It is possible to reupholster directly over old material in some cases, and it can save you a bit of money. If you are going to go this route, make sure you use a darker color than you had previously. Otherwise, you might see the old fabric beneath the new material. You should also keep in mind that reupholstering over old material is only possible with certain materials. For example, reupholstering over leather usually isn’t possible. You can ask your professional to see if this is an option for your piece.

The average cost to reupholster a piece of furniture is around $720, with most projects falling in the $380 to $1,150 range. The final price can vary significantly based on several factors. These include the size and complexity of the furniture, the cost of the new fabric (which typically ranges from $50 to $70 per yard), and hourly labor rates (often $40 to $100 per hour). Additional factors that influence the price are the piece's current condition, its age, whether it needs other repairs, the number of pieces being reupholstered, and your geographic location.

The time required to reupholster furniture depends on the item's size, complexity, and condition. The hands-on work can range from 2-3 hours for a simple dining chair to 10 to 20 hours for a large sofa. The total project timeline with a professional, including fabric sourcing and scheduling, typically ranges from one to three weeks.

Several factors can affect the timeline. Antique furniture often takes longer due to the delicate care required. If additional repairs are needed, such as sanding or refinishing wood components, the process will also take more time. A DIY reupholstery project will usually take significantly longer than a professional job.

It is often worthwhile to refinish or restore furniture, especially for high-quality, older, antique, or sentimental pieces. Older furniture tends to have better durability than modern, mass-produced items, and refinishing can cost about one-third of the price of replacement. To determine if it's cost-effective, compare quotes from local refinishing services with the price of a new, similar piece. Refinishing can refresh a piece's look and extend its lifespan. However, it may not be worth it for newer furniture made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or plywood, or for items with major structural damage. A professional can help you assess the piece and decide on the best course of action.

When deciding whether to repair, reupholster, or replace old furniture, consider its age, quality, level of wear, and overall value, including sentimental attachment. In many cases, it is more affordable to reupholster or repair furniture than to replace it, especially for antique, vintage, or discontinued pieces.

Older furniture is often made from durable hardwoods like oak and maple, giving it a longer lifespan than newer furniture, which frequently uses lower-quality materials such as plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Because of this, repairing or reupholstering a well-made older piece is often a worthwhile investment.

To determine the best course of action from a financial perspective, compare quotes from local furniture repair services with the price of a new, similar piece. Reupholstery may not be cost-effective for furniture that was originally inexpensive (e.g., under $300). For high-quality or sentimental items, however, it is an excellent way to preserve the piece and extend its life. If you're unsure, a furniture reupholstery specialist can help you evaluate the piece and make an informed decision.
