Customers say: Terrific value

"Tony and his crew showed up on time and performed the work per the contract. They did the drywall, painting, molding bathroom fixtures and flooring. Although their company's name is Maryland ProWash, they did a great job on repairing damage to the basement caused by a water leak. l would definitely have them do work again for me if a project comes up. Thanks again for a job well done."

"After Tony and crew finished our deck we liked them so much that we had them come in and paint 3 bathrooms and 4 bedrooms plus patch numerous flaws in the drywall. Sometime during this process I decided to sell my house and Tony took me around and showed me things that he could do to make the house show well and with a great looking first impression. Tony and his team ended up painting our formal living and dining rooms. The foyer and the hallway upstairs. They changed doors and locks, and painted the walls going down to the basement. I absolutely would recommend Tony. He is very professional and has a lot of drive to make his customer (me in this instance) happy. He returned my phone call every time I called him within a reasonable time period. I would like to add that to me price matters, and Tony gave me very good, comparable rates."

"They started at the scheduled time and proceeded to completion in an efficient and professional manner. Answers and telephone numbers were left for me to call if/should I want to change the configuration of anything done to the walls. More cabinets, hooks, etc. I found them to be an excellent provider. I cannot give any more details as too much time has passed since the work was completed.

"BGE used to stand for Baltimore Gas and Eletric, but I don't know that it stands for that any more. I'm dating myself, years ago it used to be Baltimore Gas and Electric. And there's a company that we have a policy through them called BGE Home and we have that electric company as well. And so, we just pay extra to have a policy and we have that. We also have the kitchen policy.  I know some people think they're a ripoff, but they have paid for themselves more than once. It's not a warranty. Our electric company used to be BG&E, but I think it's changed names a zillion times because of all of the electric competition. But the company they have, it's called BGE Home. It's kind of like a warranty. I guess you could call it a warranty service. I don't know where their address is. I just call 1-800-BGE Home. You can sign up for heating and air. We don't have their heating and air, but we've had them come out before. We have their home and their kitchen policy. One is like $9 a month, one is like $12. One just recently went up. This was like three or four years ago. I dont' remember. I just remember somebody was like, "If you don't have policy, it's very hard to get someone to come out on a weekend. We got a discount on the price because we have their policy. They came out, they sent somebody, they knew the situation, they drained the tank so we didn't have to worry. We got lucky because it was just trickling out. They drained the tank and they turned off the gas because you can't just drain a tank when you have gas. I don't know anything about it and neither does my husband. So they sent somebody out right away on a Sunday. We thought they weren't going to do it and we were calling around and nobody would come. It was an arm and a leg just to get somebody to come. And then they came right away and drained the tank and turned of the gas and then we ordered one. They said, "Call us when you get back," and we did. Then they came out and put in the new one. We have their kitchen policy, too. And my refrigerator, well, I think we've gotten three new ice makers. When you have these refrigerators with the ice makers -- they come out and replace the whole thing. They've come out for my washer and my dryer. When they can't fix it, they'll give you money toward a new one. The refrigerator is at least fifteen years old and the ice maker has been replaced at least three times. That's why I have the policy. People say, you should just save that money, but I use them so I really -- even though you take the $9 and you multiply it by 12 -- but the fact, with the water heater and the discount and washer, (my washer was over 20 years old, they gave me money towards a new one)... The good part is that when you have a problem, you're not waiting for weeks for somebody to come. I don't have them for my heating and air because I have two zone heating and it's pretty expensive to have that. But we did use them to install the new heat pump in the attic. They did a great job on that, too. That's been about four years ago. They came and tried to repair the washer, but it was just too old so they ended up giving us money towards a new one. That was like two years ago. That came out more recent than that to fix the dryer. I don't know if you've ever heard of this: our dryer would not shut off and it would come on, on it's own. Even if you had the door open. You had to unplug it. You had no idea when it was coming on, and it wouldn't spin. I was afraid of having a fire. It was crazy. The dryer would just come on any time.  We had a refrigerator and the whole unit melted and we almost had a fire and they came for that. They fixed the whole main unit in the refrigerator -- the compressor. They came and they fixed it. They fixed my washer, my dryer, my refrigerator, my hot water heater, and they installed -- even though we don't have a policy -- we got estimates and hired them to put in the new heat pump unit up in the attic. And we had county inspectors out and they checked the hot water heater and they said, "Oh, you had BGE out. They know what they're doing." We have a heat pump up in the attic and it's brutal up there. It's nasty and hot and they did a great job on that one. We have a unit, a furnace, in the basement, gas on the first floor and a heat pump in the attic. And the other one we were thinking we should get replaced. But, they came out and said, "You know what? I would run it into the ground. Stagger it. If you get them both at the same time, they're going to go out at the same time. If I were you, I would just hold off. Get the attic one because it's broke and over 20 years old, but don't replace the one that's working." That was four or five years ago. We always worry because the builder put the unit up in the attic and then he put the access plank in and it was a lot smaller than the unit up in the attic. So, I always worry, how is somebody going to get that out of there? My husband, when we go up to change the filters, he says, "I don't know what we're going to do when that one goes because I don't know who's going to get that out of there." But they did. I think they cut it in half and they got it out. No drywall damage. Nothing came through the ceiling."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Drywall is safe to cut as long as you follow proper procedures, such as wearing personal protective equipment and using the right tools to score and cut the drywall. When cutting new drywall, it can release dust with silica and other compounds that could pose health risks. Leave cutting drywall to the pros, or wear a high-quality respiratory mask, goggles, and other PPE when handling drywall.

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.

If you already have plaster walls and ceilings, adding new plaster costs $2 to $10 per square foot. For an average-sized room, that would come out to $1,200 to $10,000. However, the cost to replace plaster with drywall is higher—running between $720 and $1,250 for a 10-by-8-foot wall or ceiling (not including drywall finishing).

Popular wall textures include orange peel, knockdown, spray sand, and smooth finishes. Orange peel and knockdown are particularly common choices for drywall as they are simple and cost-effective. Orange peel texture has a lightly bumpy surface resembling the skin of an orange, while knockdown (sometimes called knockout) looks like a stucco finish with flattened high spots. In contrast, popcorn texture has fallen out of fashion, partly due to its past association with asbestos and a shift toward more restrained interior design styles.

Plaster ceilings can sag for several reasons. In some cases, the plaster and other building materials shift and come apart over time, which is why you’ll commonly find drooping plaster ceilings in older homes. Improper installation, foot traffic, and water damage—often from a leaky roof or a broken pipe—can also cause plaster ceilings to sag.
