"I had hired Valley Excavating to remove all of the existing lawn on the back side of the house and replace it with newly graded topsoil and seed. David quickly responded to my call, he messaged when he couldn't make the appointment, showed up promptly when he said he would and completed the project in a timely fashion. I would highly recommend Valley Excavating for this type of project."

"I hired Forever Excavating to rough in my driveway and house site. Iâ m not from the area and didnâ t have a lot of time to go over the project on the house site. They were able to meet me short notice and got my general understanding of what I wanted done. Once the work began I wasnâ t able to get up and see the progress of the job. Dillon and Sean went above and beyond sending pictures and recommendations on other things I had not thought about. A simple rough in job turned into a large scale grading and site work to provide a beautiful start to my new home. The few things they recommended I did turned out to make the job 100 times better than I expected. I would highly recommend them for anyone looking for any excavating work."

"Marc went above and beyond when installing a yard drainage system in our side yard. He was quick to give us a competitive quote, easy to work with, and got a complicated job done fast. I would highly recommend him for homeowners looking to modify the slope and or drainage plan for their plot."

"Brian and Cory took up my old brick walkway, re-graded the area (we had a significant ‘ponding’ issue), relaid the brick in the original, beautiful pattern, filled in the spaces between the bricks. Brian is easy to communicate with, responds promptly, shows up when he says he will. We’ve now hired him to replace steps in our backyard. Thank you Brian!"

"Duke's did a great job! They arrived at the job early and were very efficient at cleaning out the storage unit. They were professional and friendly. I was very happy to be using a local company, also. I would definitely hire Duke's again, and would highly recommend them to anyone needing any of their services."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

The cost to drill a well varies, with a national average of around $5,500 for a 150-foot well. However, prices can fluctuate significantly based on several factors, including your location, the required well depth, geological conditions, local regulations, and the specific drilling methods used. For the most accurate cost assessment, it is best to research and get quotes from local well-drilling professionals in your area.

We recommend removing the stump, and grinding is a popular way to do it. You can also dig out small stumps or stumps that have fully decayed instead of grinding them. However, don’t try using acids or fire for killing a tree stump, which is a fire hazard and illegal in many areas.

Leaving the stump alone invites eventual problems, including attracting termites, mold, and fungi.

If you’re planning to dig on your property, you’ll need to check for underground utility lines. Call the national call-before-you-dig 811 number. Once connected to an operator, you can schedule a site visit to mark underground lines. This way, you won’t accidentally dig into pipes and can cause major (read: costly) issues.

Trenching and boring are two distinct methods for installing underground utilities. Trenching involves digging a channel using equipment like an excavator, trencher, backhoe, or shovel. While it is a simpler process, it causes significant disruption to the surface, landscaping, and surrounding ecosystems.

Boring, also known as directional boring, is a less invasive alternative that uses a drill to create a tunnel for utility lines without disturbing the surface. This method is more precise and is ideal for installations that need to go underneath buildings, roads, or bodies of water. Although boring is less disruptive, it is generally more expensive than trenching.
