"I recently had an energy audit and insulation work done by Avid Energy, and honestly, the whole experience was great. The team was friendly, knowledgeable, and really easy to work with from beginning to end. They took the time to walk me through the audit results, suggested practical improvements, and got the insulation work done quickly and without any mess. It’s only been a short time, but the last couple hot days my house has stayed cool when in the past the ac used to be running all the time…the insulation definitely made a difference."

"I needed to replace fiberglass insulation that was anchored under a crawlspace. Energy Monster did an evaluation, told me about the Mass Save program, suggested insulation that would work much better than what I originally contacted them for, and installed new fiberglass and foam board, sealed the edges, and cleaned up afterwards. I'm very happy with the work and will definitely be calling them again next year to add insulation to my attic."

"These guys were fantastic! Mike really knows his heat pumps and it showsâ he was always available via email when I had a question, he walked us through the entire process for applying for the state heat pump rebates, and we couldnâ t be happier with the system one year in. Because of our Initial positive experience with Mike, we also hired Energy Monster to do our solar panel installation. Top notch, LOCAL company!"

"Ryan did excellent work. He explained everything so I could understand it. In just a few hours he rewired my electric heating system in my duplex. For the first time since I moved here (14 months) my heat is completely off !! I would give him 10 stars if it was possible, but here I would give him 5 stars."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

DIY is possible with basic tools. Professional audits provide comprehensive assessments and tailored recommendations.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Dehumidifiers typically use 300 to 700 watts of electricity per hour, whereas portable dehumidifiers use about 40 watts per hour. The exact amount of electricity your dehumidifier will generate depends on its capacity and energy efficiency. Generally, higher-capacity dehumidifiers generate more electricity than lower-capacity units, but they also usually have better energy efficiency over the long run.

Smart glass doesn’t use a lot of electricity, and you can expect a standard window to add between $1 and $2 per year to your electric bills. Smart glass is proof that energy-efficient windows work. Although your smart windows may consume a little energy to operate, they can save enough energy to offset the costs. If you’re concerned about the minimal bump to your electricity consumption, you can opt for smart tint, which doesn’t require electricity to work.

While you can perform many routine home maintenance jobs yourself, it’s often a good idea to bring pros in for certain tasks. HVAC maintenance, fireplace and chimney inspections, foundation repairs, and roof inspections and repairs should be handled by professionals who know what to look for and can safely perform repairs. You may also find it helpful to hire a local house cleaning service to help with deep cleaning.
