"Alex and his team did a marvelous job on the floors, including a new medallion we had inset into the floor. The floors went from old and shabby to new and gorgeous. The team also fixed a very bad previous floor repair and made it virtually invisible. See before and after photos and prepare to be amazed."

"These guys are great! They are efficient, completed the work on time, and worked HARD. They replaced our aging deck, stained it, replaced the wood shakes on the sides of the house, and replaced corner boards where appropriate and painted all the trim. Will hire them again when I need a job done."

"After reaching out to 3 other contractors ( 2 made appointments to look but did nit show up) I was pleased to find Green Island Homes. They replaced a retaining wall that was failing, awning brackets, and a leak issue for us. They were very experienced , professional and even friendly. I plan to have them do more soon . I highly recommend The crew at Green Island Homes"

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

The best underlayment for carpet on concrete is a sponge rubber underlayment. This type of carpet padding is durable enough to endure wear and tear on hard concrete yet soft enough to provide comfort underfoot. It also creates insulation from sound and temperature, providing warmth despite the concrete’s cold surface.

It is normal to glue carpet down, though it’s not the only or the most popular method of installing carpet. Modern techniques include tack strips and stretching the carpet, but you might still find glued carpet in older homes or a home with a DIY’d past. Removing a glued-down carpet will be harder compared to other methods of installation.

When choosing whether to install carpet in your home, consider the pros and cons of this change:

Pros

  • More affordable than laminate flooring

  • Gives the room a warmer feel

  • Softer on feet

  • Wide variety of textures and colors

  • Hides dirt easily

  • Faster and easier to install

Cons

  • Shows wear and tear more quickly than laminate flooring

  • Shows stains

  • Soaks up liquids

  • May not work well in some areas, such as a bathroom

  • Less durable than laminate flooring

  • Susceptible to water damage, mold, and mildew

Hardwood offers the highest ROI at around 75%. Engineered hardwood, tile, reclaimed wood, and laminate also increase a home’s value but with lower ROIs. Lighter tiles tend to increase a home’s value slightly more than darker tiles. Taking the ROI into account when you choose flooring can increase your home value and allow you to recoup some or all of the cost to install it.

If the stairs are already covered in carpet, you will need to remove the old carpet and possibly the carpet pad. Any damage to the stairs like cracks, loose boards, or creaky treads may also need to be repaired. You may also want to sand and refinish or paint wood stairs before installing a carpet runner.
