"My basement flooring project went awry when a subcontractor from Lowe's came to give an estimate on vinyl plank flooring, but did not account for the 2" height difference in the corner. This would have required the basement floor to be leveled, which I was informed would cost nearly double the amount that was paid for the floor parts and installation. After receiving multiple quotes from different contractors, I chose to work with Billy as he provided a solution to our problem. We decided to go with the Polycrete flooring he suggested, and are very happy with the results. Extremely durable, resistant to chemical stains, efflorescence and moisture - couldn't have asked for a better solution. I had an excellent experience working with him and his team. I had to break the job into two time frames and he was more than accommodating. He was very responsive, answered all of my questions, and professional. Given the two-part process, the job was completed in a very reasonable time frame and was fairly priced, based on other quotes I received. I've learned more about my basement than I ever thought I would in these past few months. I did plenty of research (both online and with contractors) and the results finally paid off."

"Carlos at Floor Ever helped me find a creative way to solve the problem of installing a runner on a twisting staircase. The usual way to carpet stairs with turns is to use wall-to-wall carpet so you have enough width to cover the large triangular treads (sometimes called pie steps). I looked at hundreds (possibly thousands) of wall-to-wall designs and didn't find anything I really liked -- the interesting designs are in area rugs and runners. With a runner, the problem comes on the riser between two triangular steps: because of the geometry, the runner on the upper tread, though perfectly centered, is rarely going to line up with the runner on the lower tread (also perfectly centered). If you want a formal, traditional look, you have to start with a larger rug and cut it down to make it line up properly. But if you're willing to do something funky and nonstandard, you can cut a piece of carpet for the riser that isn't a rectangle. That's what Carlos did, as you can see in the photo: he cut riser pieces that were angled on the sides so they matched the widths of the runner on the top and the runner on the bottom, which made for some sharp angles. I asked him to cut the riser pieces so the stripes on the rug run diagonally, creating a zigzag effect. I figured that would look more intentional -- and definitely more fun -- than running the stripes vertically or horizontally on the risers. I love the results and I'm grateful to Carlos for helping me solve my twisty stair problem and avoid a boring rug. Carlos had to take the 3 riser pieces away to have their edges bound, so the project couldn't be completed in a day, but the total time he spent installing was less than 6 hours. He arrived on time, communicated well, cleaned up after himself, and charged a fair price. I would definitely hire Carlos / Floor Ever again."

The cost of flooring installation is $3,000 for the average homeowner. This cost can range from $1,500 to $4,500, depending on the project size, flooring material, and any special features. For example, if stairs need new flooring, you can expect to pay about $11 to $160 per step. Additionally, hardwood flooring costs significantly more than linoleum, with hardwood ranging from $6 to $22 per square foot and linoleum costing $3 to $7 per square foot.
Believe it or not, adding new flooring—especially floors like hardwood, laminate, tile, or vinyl—can add significant value to your home. If you update your flooring close to when you sell your home, you can see up to a 70% ROI on your new floors. Adding new flooring to your home is one of the quickest ways to make the whole room look refreshed and new, which is a positive point for selling.
While you certainly can install new flooring yourself, it may not always be the best idea. Since the condition of the floors is a significant component of your property’s value, it’s important that your project looks professionally done. If not, you run the risk of needing to have them replaced again before selling your home. If you’re looking to save money on the cost of floor installation, consider removing the old flooring yourself to save on labor costs.
When it comes to flooring installers, licensing laws vary from state to state. Even if your state doesn’t require your flooring installer to have a license, your municipality or city might, so it’s a good idea to check with your town before getting started. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines.
Hiring an unlicensed flooring installer could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
It takes about one to three days for a two-person crew to lay 800 to 1,000 square feet of flooring daily. Remember that removal of existing flooring and additional prep work is considered during this time, and it’s likely that you won’t be able to pass through the room easily. In addition, you can expect lots of hammering and other noise from power tools during installation, so it’s best to plan accordingly.
