"Block made this process very simple (or as simple as it can be), and we are really happy with the design assistance we got, as well as them walking us through the design phase, procurement, board package, etc. Would definitely use again!"

"Overall, the interaction with them was good. She came in and talked about the work. There isn?t any reason why we have not used them. We are working on a project on the house right now, and we haven?t gotten to the point where we would need the services of an interior designer. We would consider using them in the future.

"It has been just over two years since we began working with Bob and Jane on the renovation of our house. From beginning to the approaching end, Bob and Jane have always been available, ready to accommodate us with visits to the house, design changes, and ready to provide advice on all matters. They were patient with us as we confronted permit problems and a year’s delay due to the 2015 winter. Without Artios Architects, we would have been lost. Bob’s and Jane’s years of architectural design experience have meant that they have been able to answer all questions and advise on all problems. We are working with a limited budget. Their advice has kept us within it and, at the same time, given us a house that we are very proud to show. Even now, as they visit us during the final construction, they are assisting us in design and color selection. Bob and Jane are sympathetic to our concerns, and clearly take great pride in the realization of their architectural design, and the creation of a livable house that is our home."

Interior Design and Decorating questions, answered by experts

Universal design is a design concept that states that products, spaces, and general environments are designed to be used by everyone, with an emphasis on accessibility for those with limited mobility or other special needs.

An architect is usually involved in the process of determining the layout and structural features and requirements of the home itself, taking into account the local codes, climate, and materials needed to make the home structurally sound. Architects may communicate more with contractors and subcontractors throughout the building process. In comparison to architects, interior designers typically focus on the aesthetics of a home interior and possibly exterior, helping the homeowner decide on color schemes, textures, and materials to incorporate into the design.

Interior decorating services usually include an initial consultation to discuss your needs and determine a style and budget that works for your space. From there, your professional designer could offer a wide range of services, including the following:

  • Determining a useful layout of furniture and decor in your home

  • Choosing flooring, paint colors, trim, and other accents

  • Coordinating color schemes and design styles throughout your rooms

  • Choosing, purchasing, and coordinating the installation of furniture

  • Choosing and installing pillows, wall hangings, and other decor throughout your home

While the Arts and Crafts movement inspired many architectural elements, the primary styles from the time include Craftsman, Tudor Revivals, bungalows, and Mission homes. You'll see elements of these styles in homes, churches, museums, and schools—particularly Country Day schools from the era.

While the terms 'interior designer' and 'interior decorator' are often used interchangeably, they represent distinct professions with some overlapping work. The primary difference lies in the scope of their projects.

An interior decorator focuses on the aesthetics of a space, making less permanent decisions about decor. Their work involves selecting colors, fabrics, furniture, wall art, paint, and other finishes to 'dress' a room and enhance its style.

An interior designer has a broader scope that includes a decorator's aesthetic focus but also extends to the structural and functional aspects of a space. Designers are qualified to plan layouts, make structural changes, and manage overall functionality. They handle permanent decisions regarding fixtures like cabinets and bathtubs, establish floor plans, and may hire contractors.

Due to the technical skills required, interior designers typically have formal education, certification, and may hold a license, which can result in higher fees. As a general rule, it is best to hire an interior designer for major remodeling projects and an interior decorator for projects focused on establishing or refreshing a home's interior style.
