SSG, or South Shore Gunite Pools, is New England's largest pool builder. We offer building, renovation and maintenance services to residential and commercial clients throughout New England. Headquartered in North Billerica MA, we have been setting the standard for gunite construction and quality swimming pools since 1975. We are shockingly unique in the way that we build, eliminating the uncertainty of relying upon subcontractors and operating with fully in-house employees. This strategy allows us to take full responsibility for our client's projects.

"Hired this company for summer 2019 to open/close and clean weekly. In the month we used SSG, the pool was not cleaned properly once. 25 tiles were damaged mysteriously upon open, there were leaves and dirt left in the pool the entire time and we have not been able to use the pool yet. We expressed our disappointment and gave them more than enough chances to rectify things. They didn't. Pictures attached are from our pool and spa today - after the tech "cleaned" and left a bill for over $200. Absolutely horrible. Terminated contract."

"We discovered a sewer back up in our basement last night. The main clean out pipe was leaking sewage back into our home and I was frantic. Having had a good experience with Boston Drain Company in a rental home years ago (our Landlord recommended them) I gave them a call. After speaking with a dispatcher I received a call from Mark, the plumber on call within five minutes. Mark explained that he was finishing a job nearby and would be at my home within an hour. He arrived as committed and got to work right away. The first thing we discovered was the old cast iron clean out pipe was cracked. Mark pointed this out and shared that whomever left it that way wasn't doing us a favor should a backup happen again. Using a power snake he pulled large clumps of roots and other unmentionables out of our sewer main. He then capped off the cracked clean out as best he could and departed. A few hours later we returned home from dinner and discovered that the backup returned with a steady drip. I contacted Mark on the cell phone number he provided and he immediately answered. And though he was in a foot of sewer water at another job he never complained and said he would come back as soon as he was done with the other job. And he did just that. He snaked the drain again and capped it off. Given the recurring issue he recommended that we get a camera in the line to figure out why the drain wasn't draining properly after having been snaked twice. He said he was putting us on the docket for first thing in the morning. This morning Chris from Boston Drain Company arrived with his See Snake camera system. As I watched the video monitor of the camera inching its way down the piper it was strangely fascinating. Chris was giving me a sewer main 101 education while commentating on what we were looking at every step of the way. We discovered root clumps, chunks of fat and well, you know, along the way. There was also a section of clay pipe that had settled and was creating a shallow pool of water. Chris explained that this creates friction for the water flow. Similar to a pool at the end of a water slide. Seeing this I was anticipating the sales pitch for their need to dig up my front yard and replace the section of pipe for thousands of dollars. After all, replacing sewer pipes is a major revenue generator for them. But nope. Chris was completely open and honest and shared that the pipes have been working for over a hundred years so a little settling isn't a major issue. But he did recommend a third party to perform a high pressure cleaning that will get rid of the roots and fat chunk blockages. A service that they stand to make no revenue from. He also arranged to have someone come over to cap off the cracked clean out pipe so it won't leak if there is a future back up. Oh, and since I paid for the initial cleaning last night there was no charge for the follow up camera visit. So while no one wants to be in a sewage back up situation feeling helpless and vulnerable to service companies. Thankfully if you are there is Boston Drain Company - professional, reasonable, informative and honest. Thank you for making a $#@%^ situation a relief."

14 EMPLOYEES, USES SUBS. DESIGN/BUILD. FIXED PRICE CONTRACTS. PRACTICES OPEN BOOK MANAGEMENT.

"I have used Out of the Woods on several occasions over the past 11+ years. Most recently he was called upon to help us in an emergency situation involving extensive tree damage to our historic home. He took charge and managed all the subs I had already contracted for the specialized repairs (slate roof, chimney, copper gutters, stucco, etc...) and I knew the project was in safe hands with him at the helm. Because of the seemingly endless weeks of rain, he personally got up on the scaffolding and constructed a massive canopy over the roof and chimney so that repairs wouldn’t suffer any more delays. His overall knowledge, professional demeanor, and genuine concern for a perfect and timely outcome, shows through in all his work and that of his crew as well. Greg is about as good as it gets!"

Earthquake Retrofitting questions, answered by experts

Projects will vary based on size and scope, but an average earthquake retrofit takes between two weeks and two months. This includes the initial evaluation and plan, bidding and contract paperwork, permitting and approval process, actual work, and final inspection. Your contractor should give you a more accurate time estimate for your specific project, and they may be able to estimate how long the permitting process will take for your area.

Generally, the retrofitting process can take two to four weeks. Your contractor will let you know if staying in your home for the entire project is feasible. However, most people are able to remain at home. If your home is undergoing earthquake rehab, it's more likely that you'll need to leave until work is complete. Your earthquake insurance may cover boarding costs if your home is deemed unsafe.

An earthquake retrofit is essential for safety in an earthquake-prone area. Without proper retrofitting, your home is at risk of sliding off the foundation, shifting, or collapsing.

You may also require a retrofit if your home was built before 1980 when building codes began requiring reinforcing, bracing, and bolting for new construction. You may not be eligible for insurance to help pay for earthquake-related damages without a retrofit.

Some cities or states may require you to have an earthquake gas shut-off valve. Your insurance provider may also have requirements for installing this valve. Even if you don’t have to have one by law, it’s wise to have a natural gas plumber install one anyway. These devices can be lifesaving and prevent fires or explosions in the event of a gas leak.

Costs vary as much as timelines. The average earthquake retrofit costs between $3,500 and $8,700. However, homes on hillsides, large homes, and those with rooms over garages can cost up to $12,000 or more. Make sure to get a few estimates to compare the cost and services.
