"Thomas Fleming Co. followed up on a foundation repair done by another company in 2014. 4 years later, it began leaking again. The previous contractor was less than responsive, came 7 weeks after I contacted him, made a quick repair and left. Still leaking the next day when it rained and he told me to wait for several rainstorms since the material interacts with the rain and will seal up? Waited thru 5 rains over 3 weeks with no change. Said he could not get here for another 3 weeks, likely due to his distance from the Cape. I wish I had discovered the Fleming Co in 2014. Tom came right away, was very pleasant and informative, assessed the problem and provided a proposal involving the interior and exterior surfaces. They returned several days later, made thorough repairs, left the job site in immaculate condition and solved the problem. Price was very reasonable for the amount of work done. Strongly recommend this company."

Aquarium Services questions, answered by experts

The average cost to pump a septic tank is around $550, though prices can range from $250 to over $1,250. The final cost depends on several factors, including the size of your tank, how full it is, and your geographic location. For example, pumping a small tank might cost between $290 and $530, while a larger 1,750-gallon tank could cost $600 or more. Prices also vary by region; for instance, costs in Minneapolis range from $175 to $275, while in Portland, they can be between $440 and $750. Regular pumping is essential to prevent waste buildup, which can lead to backups and damage to your drain field.

A septic system can fail for various reasons, and most commonly, excessive water use or sudden surges in wastewater can overwhelm the system's capacity. Neglecting regular maintenance, like tank pumping and inspections, can also lead to clogs, leaks, and eventual breakdowns. Other issues that lead to failure include age-related wear and tear, root infiltration, improper disposal of non-biodegradable materials or chemicals into the system, unsuitable soil conditions, physical damage, and even environmental factors like flooding or soil erosion.

No. You should never empty a septic tank yourself because it involves working with specialized equipment (that you probably don’t have) and puts you at risk of breathing in toxic fumes. Plus, once you’ve removed the waste, you’ll need to transport it and dispose of it safely. Instead, call an expert for this job. On average, hiring a pro to pump a septic tank costs $550.

You should pump your septic tank once every two to four years for a family of four, depending on your septic tank size. You should pump a 1,000-gallon septic tank every two years, while a 1,500-gallon tank should be pumped every four years. Water usage also affects how often you should pump your septic tank. If you notice slow drains, foul smells, or gurgling sounds from your drains, you should pump your septic tank as soon as possible.

Several things can ruin a septic tank over time, including dumping harsh chemicals (like bleach and ammonia), pesticides, and paint thinners down your drain because they can kill the bacteria in your septic tank. You should also make sure to only flush waste and toilet paper in your toilet—otherwise, you could clog your system.
