I have never dealt with such a horrible company in my life-- one that not only doesn't do the work they were paid to do, but has taken or lost precious possessions with great sentimental value to me and to my family. I've *never* worked with such a horrible company. After losing my father and step-mother in a short span of time, our family searched very carefully for a company to take care of my their estate. After much research, we chose Cherished Possessions. We scheduled and had a very nice meeting with Cas (though she was late), who made lots of promises about how things would happen, and looked at the entire house and its contents. First they told us an estate sale would be better, and then they decided they wanted to sell all the items from the house by consignment through their store instead. We went with their suggestions. What a mistake. From the beginning it was hard to get in touch with Cas-- she doesn't have voicemail set up on her telephone, doesn't return phone calls or emails. We all live out of state, so it's difficult to be at the house very often. We scheduled a day for Cas and her workers to come by and pick up the items they were going to sell. We also paid them $600 to remove things that we wanted to be donated or disposed of. She canceled and we scheduled a second day for them to come, which she also canceled. Finally, since we couldn't be in Maine for a while, and trusting that they were an ethical and trustworthy company, we decided to let Cas come in to remove the items without us bring present. What a huge mistake. We spent hours and hours carefully labeling every single item in the house-- items for her to take were labeled in one color and items to be left in the house were labeled with another color. It could not have been more clear or simple to understand what she was supposed to take and what was to be left in the house. She apparently did not care. A couple days later, I went to the house to remove a few items and stage the house for sale. I arrived to find the house a complete mess and everything in disarray. Nothing that we had marked to be donated had been taken, but the check we left for this service had been taken. None of the items to be disposed of had been removed, but the money to pay for that service had been taken. The worst part was that Cas (or her workers) took items that were specifically and clearly marked NOT to be taken. They were our possessions that we wanted to keep, either for their monetary value or sentimental value. They took a small table that had been passed down from my grandmother's family. They took a tote bag that had letters my father had written to me before he died. They tool tools that had been passed down multiple generations. They took a box that (from the outside) appeared to be an appliance, but actually contained a box my father had made by hand to make paper when I was a child. All of these things were clearly marked with our names on them, and were not near any items that were specifically marked with bright purple paper with Cas' name. When we tried to contact them (Cas and the owner), they wouldn't answer their phones (Cas has never set up the voicemail on her phone and does not return messages OR emails) and they avoided us, having employees tell us that they weren't at the store when they really were. When we finally tracked them down (by staying at their shop until they came out of the back room where they had been hiding), they claimed that they didn't have any of the items. We had pictures of each and every room, with everything labeled, pictures of the the things they had wrongfully taken, and showed them pictures of each item we were trying to find. They claimed they had never taken any of it (even though no one else had been in the house between the time they came and when I went back to the house) and didn't know where any of it was. They couldn't provide us with an inventory of the items they claimed they had taken until months after they took them, and even after some of them had been sold. They stole things from our dead parents' house, things that had great sentimental value and are irreplaceable, and had absolutely no remorse. They have done absolutely nothing to try to remedy what happened or to explain why they took things that were clearly marked for them NOT to take. They just don't care. They have taken money from my family, taken precious items that remind us of our dead parents, and caused us immense heartache. For anyone thinking of using them for consignment or an estate sale, I couldn't make a stronger recommendation against working with them. For anyone buying from their store, know you're buying from shameless thieves."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/me/south-portland/cherished-possessions-reviews-8065087.htm"},"position":8},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"Archstone Boston Common","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"MA","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Megan R."},"reviewBody":"They were increasing the rent. If we wanted to stay even an extra month at a time I think it was going to be like $4,400 and an extra year would've been $4,200. It's about a third very rich international college students that live there who smoked a lot of pot and play a lot of loud music in the middle of the week despite multiple contacts with management and promises to fix the problem. My fiance's apartment basically smelt like marijuana smoke at least once a week and often times during the week. It actually smelled like someone was in his closet smoking. They tried a couple of things like changing out the air filters and installed extra tape under the doors, but it never fixed the problem. We've had two other coworkers move there who had the same experience. It's kind of like a very expensive college dorm. It's very nice and I admit it looks great when you walk through. There's a swimming pool which was fabulous and there's a nice weight room and everything, but if you're a professional and are spending that type of money you would like the right to not have loud music at 3:00 in the morning on a Tuesday or marijuana smoke. The smoke would be so heavy at times that it would wake us up in the middle of the night. We bought an air purifier and a humidifier. We would open all the windows and run the air purifier. After that we would run the humidifier to put some moisture back in the air because it would dry everything out and then shut the windows. It was terrible and when he ultimately didn't sign the lease they asked if there was anything they could do like move him to a different unit on a different floor. He talked to them like eight times and they never offered to move him before, so he said he wasn't interested. He was on the sixteenth floor, but we have a friend who's having the same issues on the third floor and another friend who's having the same issues on the eleventh floor. It's a beautiful building, but the people who are in there make it difficult to appreciate it. The staff was great. The people who work there everyday like the concierge and the doorman are wonderful, but the actual management that could influence those types of things are just not very responsive. I did enjoy the swimming pool, but it was a real pain for my fiance. It's a great location, but it's just an unacceptable amount of marijuana. The layout was good, the kitchen features were good, and the staff who is there on a day-to-day basis were good. The price was kind of average for that type of luxury building in Boston. It was what we would expect, but they hike the price up pretty high every year. If you're like 22 years old and have that type of money the place would be great. We would call the concierge and somebody would come up to verify it was smoke. They would do that within an hour or usually within 15 minutes, but it was just that nobody would do anything about it. There's a strong no tolerance policy and it didn't stop or affect anything even a little bit. It's a non-smoking building and they are supposed to kick people out after three times. Multiple neighbors had more than three write-ups and nothing changed at all. We looked at other Archstone's but decided to go to a private real estate agent."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/ma/boston/archstone-boston-common-reviews-7739998.htm"},"position":9},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"John R Beach & Assoc Inc","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"MA","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Tom K."},"reviewBody":"The process was excellent! FAQs for real estate service projects in Brighton, MA
Yes, hiring a real estate agent is worth it. Many homeowners make the mistake of trying to sell their homes by themselves, thinking that they’ll save money on the commission, but what they save on the commission, they very often pay for in frustration and concessions on the sale price. Hiring a real estate agent to handle the sale of your home not only makes the process far easier and takes the burden off of you, but most homeowners get more for their homes when going through an agent because of the marketing and salesmanship they bring to the table.
Real estate agents work on commission, so the cost of hiring an agent will depend on the cost of the home you’re buying or selling. The listing contract should include information about the commission for both agents, which is usually 6 percent of the sale price in total or 3 percent per side. With an average national home value of around $440,000, the typical commission per agent is $13,200. However, you won’t pay this total out of pocket. Instead, the commission comes out of the sale price of the property.
Interviewing real estate agents is the best way to find the right person for the job. Consider asking the following questions to find the best agent for you:
How will you show my property?
Will you do open houses to market my home?
How will you handle dual agency (representing the buyer and you as the seller)?
Should I make repairs to my home before listing?
Will you get professional photos taken of my home?
What is the best price you think we can get for my property?
How long do you expect the sale to take?
You don’t legally need a real estate agent as a buyer, as you can represent yourself, but you should always hire an agent as a home buyer. A professional real estate agent will have access to local MLS services to find homes that meet your criteria and needs, can connect you with other professionals—like a mortgage broker and real estate attorney—you’ll need for the purchase, and can often negotiate a better price for your home to help save you money. Plus, as the buyer, your agent’s commission comes from the seller’s proceeds from the sale of the home.
