When you should repaint your house is largely up to you since it’s primarily a cosmetic update, but many people choose to repaint when they notice signs of fading, bubbling, or peeling paint. Satin paint applied to walls is best done with a roller to get a smooth, even surface. Rollers are designed to apply paint evenly and efficiently. For trim like door frames and window frames, use a brush to apply satin paint to ensure you get into all the nooks and crannies.

This may come down to personal preference, but it’s generally best to paint the ceiling before you paint the walls. Why? Painting the ceiling can be more physically demanding, and painting the ceiling last may result in drips or splatters that would mess up freshly painted walls. By painting the ceiling first, you’ll avoid having to touch up walls after any painting accidents. It may not matter, though, if you’re painting the ceiling the same color as the walls.

Yes, you can absolutely paint a wall that has skip trowel texture, but you need to make sure you have the right tools and use the appropriate strategies. First, make sure you buy a high-capacity roller with at least a ¾” nap. This type of roller will hold enough paint to make application easy, and the thick nap is more likely to apply paint over the peaks and valleys. Additionally, you can’t tape a textured wall, so paint any untextured walls or ceilings first, then tape the smooth surfaces and paint the skip trowel walls last.

Because satin paint has a sheen to it, it will highlight curves and contours. While that’s great for trim, it’s not so excellent for your repaired drywall that has a few small blemishes. In addition, satin paint will stick to your surface better if it’s primed. Sand and prime your surface before applying satin paint for best results.
