There are several significant differences between laminate and quartz countertops. Quartz is much pricier than laminate but can last for decades, while laminate lasts around 15 years. Laminate can’t be repaired or resealed and is easier to damage than quartz, which can be repaired. Both quartz and laminate are prone to heat damage. Usually, the choice comes down to your budget.

While no countertop material is truly “heatproof,” granite countertops are extremely resistant to high temperatures. Some types of granite can withstand temperatures up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. However, we don’t recommend placing hot pots and pans directly on granite countertops. Even if it doesn’t scar the granite, it may damage the sealant.

Ideally, a pot filler should not be centered but rather installed to the left or right of the cooking surface to avoid having to reach over the hot area to access it. If this arrangement isn't possible, you can technically center a pot filler above the cooking surface, but you'll need to take care not to burn yourself. Also, the filler itself will become hot from a large boiling pot or stovetop.

Onyx countertops have pros and cons. If you seal it properly and take care not to damage it, it can make a good countertop surface. However, it's more often used in bathrooms, where it’s less likely to sustain damage. Having an onyx kitchen countertop is possible, but you’ll need to take extra care not to burn, stain, or otherwise damage the material.

Durable, contemporary concrete countertops can increase home values. However, they might not offer as high an ROI as quartz or granite surfaces, which offer a timeless aesthetic and durability likely to appeal to a range of home buyers. Installing new countertops is a home improvement that can yield an average of 60% to 80% ROI when done well, using quality, perennially popular materials.
