As a boy I grew up with a love for woodworking. My father allowed me to experiment with his woodworking tools from about age 10. At 15 years of age I started working for DeRidder Builders as a remodeling contractor. After 11 years I was able to go on my own and specialize in cabinet work. We have been building custom cabinets in the DeRidder area since 1998. Now we are adding the second generation to the workforce and interested in expanding to the Lake Charles, Sulphur, Moss Bluff area. We do custom 3D designing, fabrication in our shop, finishing in a controlled, dust free environment, and finished product installation.

Closets questions, answered by experts

You can budget a little less money for how to build a closet with wire shelves than with wood shelves. Some people don’t like the aesthetics that wire shelves provide, though, meaning they’ll gladly spend a little more to add wood shelves to the build. If you decide to buy pre-made wire shelves instead of building custom-sized wood shelves, you’ll be restricted in the closet shelving dimensions you can use.

Custom closet renovations offer a return on investment of 50% to 60%. This means that if you spend $2,000 on a closet remodel, you can expect to see your home's value increase by $1,000 to $1,200. Investing in a custom closet allows you to enhance your daily living experience while building equity.

Yes, many providers offer design consultations to optimize space and functionality. Confirm with your contractor.

When storing your clothes long-term, first consider the container's breathability. While plastic bags, cardboard boxes, or vacuum sealing may be great options for short-term storage, they won’t help your clothes hold up in the long term. Breathable plastic boxes and fabric bags help with airflow, prevent mold or mildew from building up, and allow proper airflow.

To prevent sagging, consider both the material and the span of the shelf. Using sturdy materials such as plywood or solid wood can provide better support than particleboard. Additionally, limiting the shelf span to 36 inches or less can reduce the risk of sagging. For longer shelves, incorporating center supports or brackets can offer additional reinforcement.
