Our roof had been damaged by storms and displayed several of the telltale signs of serious shingle damage including creased shingles, missing shingles, impingement, streaking, more. Our insurance covered the entire replacement with us responsible only for our deductible. The material was dropped off the day before they started working. The job took about 3 days to complete and was done under a hot sun. Their crews always arrived on time and worked long hours. We have an in-ground pool close to our house so they covered the entire pool with a large tarp to help keep it clean. Two passive turbines were added to vent the roof and a nonfunctional motorized power vent was replaced with a new one. I had lots of questions which Reshaud and Carlos were more than willing to answer, explaining how they do the job, which eliminated any anxiety I had about the quality of their work. And, everyday they cleaned up the job site including running a magnetic tool over the ground to pick-up as many nails as could be found. The curing time for stucco typically takes several weeks to fully complete. During the curing process, the stucco undergoes a chemical reaction and gradually hardens. It's important to note that curing is different from drying. While the surface of the stucco may dry relatively quickly within a few hours or days, the curing process continues beneath the surface, strengthening and solidifying the stucco.
It's best to avoid excessive moisture exposure during the curing period, as it can impede the curing process. The exact curing time can vary based on factors such as temperature, humidity, and the specific stucco mixture used.
You can use small bits that are up to 3/8 inch in diameter, or larger bits that are 1/2 inch or more in diameter. Make sure the bits you use are coated with carbide or diamond; this information is usually visible on the package. You can also use hole saw bits to drill into stucco.
Stucco is very challenging to DIY, so it’s always best to leave the work to professional stucco contractors. The same recommendation applies to painting a stucco house, which should be left in the reliable hands of a professional exterior painter.
Inexperienced DIYers can make several critical mistakes during stucco application, such as:
Failing to apply sufficiently thick layers for longevity and water resistance
Uneven application
Uneven texture across the exterior
Mixing the stucco improperly, leaving a weak structure
Failing to texture properly in between coats, leading to cracking and chipping
German schmear is a durable brick masonry coating. It should last at least a decade or two without flaking or fading, even with minimal maintenance. This makes it an economical option compared to the cost of painting your house exterior, which usually needs to be repainted every five to 10 years to keep it looking its best—thus costing more over the same time period.
Mortar, or masonry mortar, is mainly used in joints and as parging for stone, brick, or cement construction. Stucco is primarily a surface material used as wall coverings. For maintenance, masonry will need repointing or replacing as damage or land shifting occurs, whereas stucco will need patching or refinishing as it tends to crack over time along with other types of wear-and-tear.
