Brick brings a ton of character to homes, so your shutters should complement them, not compete with them. Raised panel shutters are a popular choice for Colonial or Ranch-style homes. Louvered shutters offer a bit more texture and pair nicely with older or more detailed architecture. As for shutter colors for brick houses, the best colors usually fall in the earthy range—deep browns, warm tans, or soft beiges.

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.

While flat and satin finishes are ideal for garage or front doors, siding, and trim, gloss and semi-gloss are more common on shutters. That’s because these types of finishes highlight this proportionally smaller exterior home feature, adding both contrast and layers of texture to the overall facade. Other types of finishes aren’t off limits, but you’ll have more success by choosing one that provides a nice sheen. 

Whether you should use shutter Loks or screws depends on the type of shutters in question. Vinyl shutters work best with shutter Loks, which are more forgiving and less likely to damage the material, while wooden or metal shutters typically use metal screws.

Shutter Loks are also better for masonry surfaces on your home’s exterior or in coastal regions where screws are more likely to rust, but they are harder to remove and more permanent. Meanwhile, metal screws are more versatile and work best for most other surfaces.
