"This was our first time using Home Advisor or any company like it. Before I could put my phone down AAA (Shawn Curry) was calling me. We agreed that he would call after the storm (Barry) had passed. He called on Tuesday, was at our home within 2 hours, he checked out our problem...then said I can fix it now if you would like. Our roof was repaired in 2 hours. We thought that due to past storm damage and the new damage that he might tell us we needed a new roof. He said that we still have a lot of life in our current roof. We will use him again and would highly recommend him, which we have already done."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Architectural shingles typically last between 20 and 30 years, though most homeowners should plan on replacing them every 20 to 25 years. While some manufacturers offer warranties for 30 to 50 years, especially for extreme weather, achieving such a long lifespan is rare. The actual lifespan can be shorter in areas prone to strong winds, hailstorms, or other extreme weather. It is recommended to replace your roof before it reaches the end of its life to reduce the risk of roof failure, leaks, and costly property damage. Scheduling regular roof inspections will help you determine your roof's remaining life and identify the best timeline for replacement.

The most common slope range for roofs on houses in snowy areas is between 4/12 and 6/12, or 50%. A roof with a slope of less than 10%, or roughly a 2/12 pitch, won’t be effective at shedding snow. However, roofs that are too steep can allow large amounts of snow to build up and fall all at once, creating a hazard for those on the ground.

You cannot replace granules that have been lost off shingles. The granule embedding process is part of shingle manufacturing, and once the bond holding the granules to the shingles has been lost, the granules are gone for good. Shingles with granule loss must be fully replaced to continue offering adequate protection.

You can technically install a metal roof over asphalt shingles, but it isn’t a good idea. This is because you’re essentially creating a moisture barrier under the metal, which can easily—and often does—lead to significant mold damage. Removing an asphalt roof isn’t terribly expensive, and some roofing companies might cut you a serious labor and disposal discount if you add it to a new install.

Metal roofs have a reputation for being noisy, but with proper installation and adequate insulation, they are not significantly noisier than shingle roofs. The type of metal used can affect the sound level; for instance, steel roofs are typically noisier than slate or asphalt tiles but quieter than aluminum. While some people find the sound of rain on a metal roof pleasant, you can take steps to reduce the noise. Installing a thicker underlayment, adding insulation between the roof and the house, or using acoustic tiles can effectively muffle the sound. The gauge (thickness) of the metal roofing can also contribute to sound dampening.
