The early stages of building a house are harder than the later stages; laying the foundation and framing the house are two of the most challenging steps. However, it varies for everyone. This answer varies based on where you are, but most states require that all homes are greater than 320 square feet. Remember that four walls are not the only requirements—windows, closet space, minimal ceiling heights, and indoor air quality are also factors. While a log cabin is often less expensive to build than a typical home, cabins actually have a similar cost per square foot. The main difference affecting price is that log cabins tend to be much smaller than traditional homes. For instance, many cabins are about 500 square feet, versus a traditional house which averages between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet.

A guest house is not a bump-out addition. A bump-out addition is a small home addition built onto a preexisting room of your house, like a bay window or walk-in closet. While you can do a bump-out addition to a constructed guest house, a guest is not a bump-out addition. Other common bump-out additions are extra living room seating, space for a bathtub in a bathroom, and extra cupboard space in a kitchen. 

Local regulations dictate how big an ADU can be, and there may also be restrictions on the percentage of the main residence’s square footage an ADU can have. In most cases, an ADU must be smaller than the main residence, but check with your local building authority to confirm restrictions on ADU size.
