"Bradie was great to work with. He got right out to take care of my problem and got the job done. I would highly recommend him. His prices are reasonable and he stood behind his quoted price. He also helped me find a contractor that was able to fix everything. If you have a water damage problem call Magic Steam before you call any of the other franchise dealers. You won't regret it!"

"I looked out from my back porch on a Friday and the entire back of our yard looked like a skating rink -- and we were due to leave for 3 months on Sunday (in 2 days time). I absolutely panicked as we had non-refundable tickets. I "Googled" sprinkler repair people and called the only one listed in our area -- no reply, left message, no one EVER returned the call. I contacted HomeAdvisor on-line, typed in the problem and Scott's Landscaping guy called me an hour later and came 30 minutes after that -- 2 guys and were they great! They located the main sprinkler on/off valves (there were 2 valves that the previous "sprinkler" guy had left ON, turned it off -- which stopped the leak after they located where it was coming from. It was 8 degrees that day, but they managed to dig down and repair the pipe. They will come back in the spring to see if they can get my sprinkler system going again as it hasn't been used in about 6 years! They were great and very, very reasonable. I will use them again, definitely."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

If you want to make a deck cleaner from products already in your home, there are various options. The most common is to use a gentle blend of 1 gallon of warm water and 2 tablespoons of ammonia-free dish soap. You can also mix water with distilled vinegar. Sprinkling on some baking soda can help to remove mold and mildew. You can add oxygen bleach (but never damaging chlorine bleach) to the water and ammonia-free dish soap solution for something a bit stronger.

In most cases, there should be a small gap between the house and the deck, usually no more than ½ to ¾ of an inch. This space allows water and moisture to flow through instead of pooling against the side of your house. It also lets flashing protect your siding from runoff, which is one of the most common issues with decks.

Composite decking might cost more upfront, but it delivers value in terms of durability. Unlike wood, composite material resists common deck problems such as rotting, fading, warping, and all the other things you don’t want a deck to do. The extra processes lead to a higher price tag, but you’ll save big in maintenance costs down the road.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.
