"Utilizing All Service Moving for the move was a very positive experience. They had good communication, answering several questions prior to the move and did a final confirmation just prior to the move date. As for the physical move itself, Jose, Abraham, and Alberto were polite, diligent, and careful moving the many items, and managed to complete the move more quickly than anticipated."

"My husband and I are doing a cross-state move. I called five different moving companies to hunt for the best deal. Jonathan Richards (owner) was able to offer the most competitive rate and had the highest level customer service on the phone compared to other competitors. Being in retail, customer service and professionalism is a deal breaker for me. Jonathan is the biggest reason I ended up reserving with Ketuckiana Moving. Thank you ALL for your efficiency, professionalism, and excellent service! I highly recommend Kentuckiana Moving for anybody moving in the Louisville area!"

"The move was professionally done. Members of the moving team were pleasant and informative. They carefully assessed the best way to get the piano in my house. Unfortunately, an accident occurred when moving the piano out of the seller's house, leaving some gashes in the wood along the front of the piano. I was not there and the seller did not see what happened, so have no idea why the damage occurred. The company was most gracious in giving me a reduced moving fee for the damage. This should help in covering costs to try to hide the wood damage."

"The actual movers were nice and very careful with our belongings. Nothing was dropped, broken or even scratched. The move itself, however, was not managed well from the beginning. I had had a bad experience with our last professional move 15 years ago which I thought was caused by not having an onsite estimate prior to the move. So I actually got 2 estimates prior to the move, walking them through the house and making sure they had the full grasp of everything that had to be moved. I had said that we would be moving the contents of the closets and that I had started to back other items (pictures, kitchen, etc) but that I hadn't gotten much of that completed yet. I received estimates back from both movers, saying that my move would require 4 movers and 2 trucks. Chappell's was lower and, since both movers had been recommended by the professional organizer I was using, I went with them. Given that we had gotten our apartment before our actual house closing, I left it up to the scheduler to decide which day would work best for them. She chose Tuesday, June 13th. Robbie, the estimator, had made a point of saying "communicate with me, that is how this goes smoothly." We decided 1 day before the move that our college son's belongings, which had been in our basement for the estimate, would not fit in our new apartment so we decided to get an offsite storage unit. I called Robbie to ask if this stop could be added and he said that was fine, it shouldn't affect the overall move, "you should be fine." No mention of an extra cost. I asked when to expect the movers, since I hadn't been given an exact time and he said between 8:30-9 am. I received a call from the head mover at a little before 9 am, saying they were on their way and would be there in 30 min. I thought that seemed a little late but didn't argue. When 9:45 rolled around and no movers arrived, I called Robbie, who said that there had been a miscommunication between drivers and that they would be there soon. Both trucks did not arrive until 10:10. When they did, there were only 3 movers with them. When I inquired about the 4th mover, I was told that "he didn't show up." Another similarity to my last move! I reminded the head mover that we were taking items from one particular spot in the basement to an offsite storage location, which he said he didn't know about. He said he would load those items first, on the smaller truck, and unload it at the storage unit after delivering the other items. I had arranged for my professional organizer to meet me at the apartment at approximately 1 pm so that she and her assistant could get items unpacked and assembled so that my husband and I could function in the apartment that night. She called around 12 pm and the movers were only 3/4 finished with completing loading the items. She decided to push back meeting me until 1:45 to give the movers more time to load and deliver. I left the house at 1 to go deliver refrigerated items to the apartment so I left before all items were loaded. At 2 pm, the movers had not yet arrived so I called to see where they were and the head mover said they were almost there. Aware that they had not eaten lunch and wanting them to finish as quickly as possible, I provided a tray of sandwiches, bottled water and, after a run to the store, chips and Powerade. It was a very hot day and we even had a brief downpour of rain. The head mover told me that he had not been able to get all of the storage bins in the basement into the truck. He did not offer any solution. Approximately 2 hours after arriving, the 3rd mover said he had to leave to pick up a child from daycare. At this point, I called Robbie and told him where we were with the delay of the move, that the lack of a 4th person was slowing them down and now going to 2 people, they would not have time to deliver the items to the storage unit. He said that he would authorize the head mover to meet me at the storage unit the next morning. I was actually supposed to be cleaning the house for the new owners the next day but felt I had no choice. I also told him that I wouldn't pay anything over the initial quote because the whole move had been understaffed. He said that was correct. There was no mention of the items left at the house. I felt, at that point, I couldn't argue. I did not have my quote in front of me, so I didn't. I only knew that my goal, as I had communicated with the professional organizer, of having the move completed and the apartment unpacked so that my husband could come home, eat dinner and go to bed in his bed that night. The head mover did not sit down to get his payment until almost 6:30 pm, at which point he insisted that I was being charged a 3 man, then 2 man rate for the day. Since the total came to the original number, I didn't argue. I was also grateful to him for remaining calm and being careful with our belongings. The organizer and her assistants had been going on to the truck to help unload boxes because the movers were unloading so slowly and ended up staying until 7 pm (they had planned to stay until 5 pm only and come back the next day to finish up). She said to me several times "I am not happy with how this is going." But I felt stuck. I just wanted to belongings delivered! The next morning, the head mover agreed to meet me back at the house to load the remaining storage boxes in the basement, which amounted to quite a few, and drove them and the other contents to the storage unit, then to the basement storage until in the apartment. One of the biggest problems with our last move it that the mover left our entire attic, which we then had to move ourselves. This wasn't quite as much but it was more than my husband and I had bargained to move. And it was all in plain sight when Robbie came for the quote. The whole activity, that I participated in and helped with, didn't end until after 12 pm and I was worn out. Thankfully, our closing on the house was moved to the next week or else I would have had to spend the next 8 hours cleaning the house and distributing other items. It took another day to get my home office set up in the apartment and pull up my original moving quote to realize that I had, in fact, been charged the 4 man rate for the entire 8 hr job. I truly believe, had the move been staffed with 4 people from the beginning, it would have been completed as quoted within 7-8 hrs, even with the stop at the storage unit. But it never was staffed with 4 and then went down to 2 for the last hour and the next day. The biggest impact for me financially was having to pay an additional 3 hrs of organizer time, which wiped out my budget for having her come and help over the next week. I sent an email to Mr. Buddy Smith, owner of Chappell Moving, who didn't respond initially. After following up with another email, I received a response from the office person, saying that Robbie had spoken to me during the move and that I seemed "fine" with everything and that they didn't know that I was going to have help unpacking. The professional organizer, Lynn Maderios, called Mr. Smith herself to explain how poorly managed the move was and said that if he didn't provide me with some form of compensation, she would not refer to Chappell Moving again. Mr. Smith has made no further contact with. I am only in this apartment temporarily, until I find another property, at which point I will need professional movers again. I will not being using nor referring to Chappell Movers again."

Moving questions, answered by experts

It can be tempting to want to help your movers as they pack or transport your belongings, but in general, most movers prefer their customers to stay out of the way. Rest assured that your movers are confident in their skills and the process will likely go faster without your help. If you see something concerning, let your movers know right away so they can adjust or remedy the issue.

Yes, movers will usually move one item like a gas grill—but your propane tank must be empty if you want them to move it. If you still have propane, you’ll need to either transport it yourself or dispose of it properly and purchase a new one after the move.

The first step to choosing a relocation company is determining the distance of your move, types of services needed, and how many professional movers you need to hire. Once you set the parameter of your move, get price quotes from at least three local moving companies to compare pricing. Then, choose a relocation company that fits within your budget, supplies the necessary services, and has positive reviews from previous moving customers.

No, homeowners insurance does not typically cover moving expenses. Homeowners insurance provides coverage and pay-outs if you experience damage to the home you currently live in. You’ll need to save separately for moving expenses like hiring movers, renting a tow truck, or shipping your belongings.

Although it's one of the most beautiful places to reside, there are some cons to consider. The cost of living is higher, and it's one of the most expensive states to live in.

If you have pets, you will have to put them through a quarantine program that can last up to four months. Plus, there is potential for natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
