Staining a wood fence isn’t guaranteed to prevent warping, but it can help. Plus, it’s a beginner-friendly DIY project that you can finish in a few days. While power washing isn't a requirement before you stain a fence, it can make the job much easier and faster while reducing manual labor requirements. Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. Rags used with oil-based stains are highly flammable and can spontaneously combust in the right conditions. To reduce the fire risk, throw them in a metal container after use and add rocks on top to secure them. Add an inch of water and seal the container. Take the rags in the container to a hazardous waste factory as soon as possible.
