"Working with Emily and her team was a wonderful experience. No pressure, professional and helpful every step of the way. Prices and product far outweigh the big box store. I would highly recommend Granite Empire to anyone looking to replace their existing countertops. UPDATE 07/22/2021: My experience with Granite Empire was such a great one. Emily went above and beyond my expectations. She was very knowledgeable about the product and was patient and flexible with my crazy reno schedule. "First of all Greg Morris is really a great person to know and work with. He is friendly and the ultimate professional. His attention to detail is amazing. The estimate we received was detailed and he laid out each phase of the work to be done and the cost. We used slate for the porch and fireplace and a porcelain tile for the rest. At each phase Greg would make helpful suggestions that added greater value to what was being done. I never felt pressured to do anything and always welcomed his suggestions. Greg had the idea to do slate stone for our fireplace. That was a great idea. It turned out wonderful. The front porch is great. The first floor work is really something to see. The home had tile in the entry, bath and kitchen when we bought it. When Greg finished installing the new tile we were amazed at the difference in quality. It was stunning! The tight cuts at the doors and around the toilet even, Just so much care and attention to detail. You can tell he loves his work."

Stone Countertops questions, answered by experts

The least porous countertop material is engineered quartz. Made from a blend of natural quartz and resins, it is non-porous and highly resistant to stains, scratches, and bacteria. This makes quartz countertops exceptionally low-maintenance and durable, ideal for kitchens and bathrooms where hygiene and easy upkeep are priorities. Other non-porous options include solid surface materials like Corian, which also offer excellent resistance to moisture and stains.

Engineered quartz is an artificial, nonporous material made from a mix of mined ground quartz, polymer resins, and pigments, making it a lower-maintenance option. In contrast, quartzite is a natural stone composed of sandstone, which makes it highly resistant to heat but often requires sealing and more careful upkeep. You should clean both types of stone with non-abrasive cleaners that have a low or neutral pH, avoiding acidic cleaners like vinegar, as well as wire brushes and scouring pads.

The best way to save money on countertop installation is to choose an affordable material. For example, if you have a busy kitchen and need durability, choose a more affordable but lasting material like granite countertops. Likewise, if you don't use your countertops often, you can use a softer material that costs less than more sturdy ones.

Another way to cut costs is to remove and dispose of the existing countertops yourself, if possible. That way, countertop installers can get straight to placing the new feature, reducing labor costs.

Quartz countertops are known for their durability, but they aren’t indestructible. Quartz countertops can crack under extreme pressure, like when experiencing a heavy impact. The same can happen with regular exposure to high temperatures. Finally, improper installation makes the quartz more vulnerable.

Stone can last anywhere from 15 to 100 years before it needs to be restored. You should clean your stone flooring or countertops regularly using cleaners designed for stone surfaces. Stay on top of vacuuming to prevent scratches from deteriorating stone faster, deep clean your stone surfaces using a pH-neutral cleaning solution at least once a year, and reseal the stone every one to five years, depending on foot traffic or usage.
