"Working with Emily and her team was a wonderful experience. No pressure, professional and helpful every step of the way. Prices and product far outweigh the big box store. I would highly recommend Granite Empire to anyone looking to replace their existing countertops. UPDATE 07/22/2021: My experience with Granite Empire was such a great one. Emily went above and beyond my expectations. She was very knowledgeable about the product and was patient and flexible with my crazy reno schedule. All my questions were answered promptly and professionally. The guys that installed were very respectful and professional. They did a great job and cleaned up everything. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a new countertop."

"First of all Greg Morris is really a great person to know and work with. He is friendly and the ultimate professional. His attention to detail is amazing. The estimate we received was detailed and he laid out each phase of the work to be done and the cost. We used slate for the porch and fireplace and a porcelain tile for the rest. At each phase Greg would make helpful suggestions that added greater value to what was being done. I never felt pressured to do anything and always welcomed his suggestions. Greg had the idea to do slate stone for our fireplace. That was a great idea. It turned out wonderful. The front porch is great. The first floor work is really something to see. The home had tile in the entry, bath and kitchen when we bought it. When Greg finished installing the new tile we were amazed at the difference in quality. It was stunning! The tight cuts at the doors and around the toilet even, Just so much care and attention to detail. You can tell he loves his work."

Stone Countertops questions, answered by experts

There are three main downsides to quartzite: the cost, the porosity, and the weight. As a natural stone, there’s a level of scarcity that can drive up the price of certain types of quartzite. Even more common varieties are less affordable than synthetic materials like laminate and other natural stones like granite.

You’ll also have to reseal your quartzite countertop annually to combat the natural porosity and reinforce your cabinets to account for the added weight.

There are many differences between solid surface and quartz countertops. Whether one is as good as the other will depend on what you value most in a counter. These two materials are nonporous, although quartz is more durable. Some people may prefer the look of quartz, although they’re both available in many different colors and designs.

Engineered quartz is an artificial, nonporous material made from a mix of mined ground quartz, polymer resins, and pigments, making it a lower-maintenance option. In contrast, quartzite is a natural stone composed of sandstone, which makes it highly resistant to heat but often requires sealing and more careful upkeep. You should clean both types of stone with non-abrasive cleaners that have a low or neutral pH, avoiding acidic cleaners like vinegar, as well as wire brushes and scouring pads.

Some of the cheapest ways to change granite countertops without replacing them include painting, honing, or changing the finish, covering them with tile or laminate, and using countertop contact paper. Dollar for dollar, applying countertop film is the cheapest, easiest, and most reversible way to update the look of your countertops. No matter what you choose, remember that permanently marring the original countertops can cost you money when you’re trying to sell your home, so make smart choices and preserve the integrity of the granite.

Installing granite kitchen countertops costs about $3,250, ranging from $2,000 to $4,000, depending on the quantity and quality of the granite, use of granite tile or granite slabs, the type of granite, and its color and texture. Varieties of granite include:

  • Alaska white: $35 per square foot

  • Ubatuba: $30–$60 per square foot

  • Silver cloud: $35–$40 per square foot

  • Absolute black: $45–$60 per square foot

  • Black galaxy: $50–$70 per square foot

  • Blue Louise: $70–$100 per square foot

  • Crema Bordeaux: $80 per square foot

  • Solarius: $60 per square foot
