To unclog an air duct, you’ll need to hire an air duct specialist to clean the ductwork. Air ducts are too tricky for a homeowner to access without special equipment, so a pro must thoroughly clear out a clog caused by dust and dirt buildup. However, if furnishings block your air ducts, you can move the furniture away from the vents to get the system to work correctly again.

Your evaporator coils should be cleaned at least once per year. However, the frequency of cleaning depends on your air conditioning system age and performance. If your system is old, keeps breaking down, or continues to underperform, you should have your evaporator coils cleaned twice per season. 

Your home’s location also plays a central role. For example, if you live in climates with a lot of moisture, humidity, wind, dirt, or dust, you’ll likely need to have your coils cleaned more than once yearly. 

While you can put air fresheners at the opening to ductwork, most experts don’t recommend it. You will only disguise the odors rather than treat the underlying cause. Plus, blasting the concentrated chemical fragrance into your home’s air when the HVAC system is on may be overpowering and cause respiratory issues.

Areas of your home may provide an ideal environment for green or black mold. Most molds love moisture and will thrive in wet or damp areas. Some types of mold, such as Stachybotrys chartarum, grow well on materials commonly used in homes, such as gypsum board and wood. Mold may also grow in areas where there are leaks, such as in bathrooms, kitchens, or basements.

Air duct cleaning hasn’t been proven to prevent health issues, but it may help reduce contaminants in your home, which is especially important if you or a household member has asthma or allergies. Air duct cleaning is worth it if you have mold growth, pest infestations, or visible debris blowing from the air vents.
