"We couldn’t be happier! Our general contractor removed a staircase that formed the wall of our very small galley kitchen. Kristeen did an amazing job designing a layout and cabinets that transformed the kitchen into our favorite room in our house. She used every inch of space available and designed some unique storage for us."

Interior Design and Decorating questions, answered by experts

Mid-century modern design focused primarily on two things: simple, functional furniture, often with geometric shapes, and specific color palettes that included earth tones and what we’d today call retro colors. Furniture often blended different materials, like teak or oak wood, with vinyl, metal, and glass. Common mid-century modern paint colors included browns, reds, burnt oranges, yellows, aqua greens, and whites.

Experts assess weight, select appropriate hangers, align pieces, and install securely using safe techniques that ensure an even and aesthetically pleasing display.

Look to the professionals when figuring out the secrets to styling a bookshelf. Place decor in varying heights, mix colors and textures, and always create a balanced overall design by alternating where you place extra decor items. Most importantly, don't overfill the shelf. Leave a bit of open space to deter clutter.

The main difference between a home stager and an interior designer is that the former creates temporary, generally appealing spaces, while the latter creates personalized design choices for your permanent home. A home stager seeks to depersonalize your home while also showing off the best features of the home to potential buyers. An interior designer works with you to infuse your personal style into the decor in your home. You’ll typically only hire a local home stager when selling your home.

A hearth often looks like a tile or brick floor that juts out from and surrounds your fireplace. A hearth can be made of stone, brick, ceramic, or any other fireproof material. Brick offers a classic and traditional vibe, whereas a hearth made of marble or ceramic may lean more toward modern aesthetics. The most common depth of a hearth is 20 inches.
