"Sam inspected & cleaned our fireplace & while inspecting the chimney he found damage caused by a woodpecker & ensuing water damage. He cleaned out & replaced the damage, including some siding. Sam is very personable, professional and very easy to work with. We are very happy with Sam's work. We will use his business again in the future and will recommend him to anyone needing work on their fireplace!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

You can burn wood with oak wilt, as heat from the fire destroys the fungus, and smoke won’t threaten healthy trees. However, wood of unknown origin should be burned during the dormant season—do not store wood in the warmer months for the winter season. If you harvest oak, let it dry in the sun before transporting it elsewhere.

The timeframe for a gas fireplace installation typically ranges from 1 to 7 days, depending on the complexity of the project. A basic installation with gas line connections and venting may take 1-3 days, whereas a more involved project that includes framing and masonry work can take 3-7 days.

A chimney cap costs about $300 on average to install, with prices ranging from $75 to $1,000. The final cost depends on several factors, including the professional you hire, the accessibility of your chimney, the cap's material and size, whether any repairs are needed, and if it requires custom fabrication. Chimney caps are usually made from galvanized steel, stainless steel, or copper. Copper caps are the most expensive, followed by stainless steel and then galvanized steel. Excluding labor, average material costs are around $100 for galvanized steel, $250 for stainless steel, and $600 for copper. You may also face additional costs, such as hiring a chimney sweep to clean the chimney before the cap is installed.

There are six main choices of fireplace inserts: wood-burning, gas, propane, pellet, electric, and coal. Coal fireplace inserts aren’t as popular as they once were because burning coal emits a lot of carbon monoxide. Any fireplace insert will require proper supervision, and it’s a good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in the room for added safety.

Yes, you can use an existing chimney with a wood-burning stove if it meets specific requirements. The stove’s vent pipe size must be compatible with the size of your chimney flue. Your contractor can tell you whether your chimney is suitable for installation.
