"We had an attic fan that stopped working. The tech who came out explained everything he was doing and testing before actually doing it. We thought we would have to replace the motor, and he was honest about the cost upfront. Luckily it just happened to be a faulty switch. He saved us hundreds of dollars!"

"When my mother's health took an unfortunate turn for the worse in the last year due to developing medical issues, the family and I struggled to solve the problem with a bit of DIY trial and error - but quickly realized we were in over our heads! Thankfully, Clark Handyman Services picked up and were happy to help listen and coordinate with me personally to guarantee that our needs were met without fail and assured us that they would be able to meet our goals and have everything accomplished well within the estimated window of completion. The all-weather handicap accessible ramp with attached deck and rails (all treated lumber which was sealed and stained perfectly to match the existing structure) sit neatly in place. It is squared to a "T", stable enough the grandkids can run around without wobbles, and to top it off it all fits snugly against the house without water run off inevitably causing me future worry by penetrating the foundation and basement walls thanks to the gutters and drain spouts they installed before wrapping up the project! THANK YOU for bringing us peace of mind with our mother's mobility, for being safety oriented, kind, courteous, and patient group of professionals who are dedicated to pushing the boundaries for the standard of excellence just a few steps further than I thought possible. Will be using them again this summer and telling my friends! -JB & Family"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

Potential benefits of using a natural gas generator include reducing your carbon footprint, lower likelihood of carbon monoxide exposure, budget-friendly operating costs, and low-maintenance, continuous fuel supply. Some possible drawbacks, though, include higher initial installation costs, dependency on a natural gas supply, and installation complexity. Keep in mind that pros and cons will vary based on the type and brand of natural gas generator.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.
