"I prefer to use independent contractors, but was told by several contractors that I would need to use Epp Foundation for this job. I should have brought someone in from out of town. Unbeknownst to me, a salesman (not someone who does the work) came out to make the bid. It ended up being a situation where he didn't know what needed to be done. To make a long story short, using Epp is like taking your vehicle to a salesman to find out what needs repaired instead of to a mechanic. This cost me both time and money. The crew was great but the salesman dropped the ball and his boss backed him instead of providing customer support. Epp repaired some concrete outside the building, but I used an independent contractor to repair the inside and saved 50% on the cost of the repair. Seek out another company even if it means bringing someone in from out of town."

Discoloration ondifferent types of brick can range from harmless to red flag. For example, efflorescence that is caused by a buildup of water-soluble white salt is considered harmless. However, green or greenish-yellow stains are caused by salts that are harmful to brick. Staining can also be caused by rust, corrosion, lime run, soot, algae, or moss.

Repointing brick is recommended every 25 to 30 years. Professional repointing can easily last this long if you're following all basic brick and stone maintenance tips. However, you may find that you need repointing more often if you live in an area that sees harsh weather or if the construction of your home was rushed. Additionally, if you DIY your brick repointing, you’re more likely to find that you need additional repointing more often, so every 10 to 15 years might be more appropriate.

Spalling brick is not uncommon, but it does indicate a serious issue. It can be caused by water damage, an intense freeze-thaw cycle, or something else. Painted bricks can be susceptible to spalling, as the paint doesn’t allow the porous material of the brick to breathe, which can trap moisture. For extremely hard brick, using a power drill with a hammer function may give you better results. The drill bit will heat up as it goes into the extremely hard brick, so you may need to stop after a few minutes and allow the bit to cool before starting to drill again.
