Hardwood Flooring questions, answered by experts

Hardwood floors are expensive, but they are also incredibly durable and can last decades with proper care. Along with being long-lasting, hardwood floors can give you an incredible ROI—up to 118% on average. Most homeowners find hardwood floors worth the initial investment, so keep that in mind when deciding which way to go.

No subflooring is perfectly level, but you should never ignore any noticeable floor sagging. Most contractors deem a floor that slopes by a 1/2 inch to 1 inch per 20 feet of floor acceptable. Further investigation is required when the slope or sag is more than one and a half inches.

Avoid placing carpet in the bathroom or the kitchen. After all, moisture is no friend to carpeting. Beyond that, it’s down to personal preference. Some people dislike when a garage or basement features carpet, but others enjoy it.

Flooring costs $3,162 on average, but can range between $1,530 and $4,860, depending on the flooring type and room size. New flooring costs an average of $3 to $22 per square foot, including installation. Vinyl plank flooring and carpet fall on the lower end, while stone, tile, and hardwood are among the most expensive flooring materials.

In some cases, stairs without carpet are actually slipperier than carpeted stairs, but if the carpet is brand new, dirty, or just slick, it may seem like your stairs are the most slippery ones in existence. Fortunately, traction treads can be added over most stair surface materials, increasing the traction you’re able to get and reducing the risk of slipping.
