"I highly recommend Impact Painting for deck staining services. Their team was knowledgeable, experienced, and meticulous in their work. They properly cleaned and prepared the deck before applying the stain, resulting in a rich and even color. The deck now looks beautiful and is well-protected against the elements. I am extremely satisfied with the outstanding deck staining services provided by Impact Painting."

"Aritas LLC, cancelled the first scheduled day due to some of his employees taking vacation and did not notify until after I called questioning if they were going to arrive that day. We rescheduled for the following week and they arrived on-time. Overall, the finished work was done as discussed and were thorough for adding caulking around the doors to prevent water from leaking inside the house. Jose also repaired the doors on two cabinets as well. He mentioned that if there are any future leaks inside the house that he would fix it at no additional cost."

"We communicated by text. He sent me the estimate quickly. He sent me an estimated time of when he would start. He text me that there was gonna be a short delay. The day he was starting, he said he would be there between eight and 10. He arrived by 9 AM. He listened to my final instructions. I added some shrubs that needed to be trimmed. He removed dead plants and mulch, added a weed barrier and river rock. He was very pleasant to speak with. Hard-working. When finished he removed and cleaned up everything."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

While the answer varies based on weather, 10 a.m. is a good time to start painting. The dew will have dried, meaning there’s no moisture on the house, and the temperature will likely be moderate and the sunlight less direct. Starting mid-morning should also give you enough daylight and pleasant weather to work on the job for several hours.

Satin paint is generally considered a better choice for woodwork—including trim, baseboards, cabinets, and doors—than flatter finishes like eggshell or matte. Its soft sheen enhances architectural details and stands up well to frequent cleaning and daily wear. Compared to eggshell and matte finishes, satin is more durable for high-touch areas because it is less porous and doesn't absorb dirt as easily. Matte finishes, in particular, are prone to scuffs and are harder to clean, making them less practical for surfaces like doors and cabinets.

You’ll want to avoid excessively hot or humid conditions, so it’s best to apply your stain in late spring to early fall. It's also important to watch the weather forecast and aim for days when there isn’t rain expected for at least three days. For new decks, allow the wood to season beforehand for at least four to eight weeks.

Aftercare includes routine cleaning, checking for water repellency, and promptly addressing any chips or peels, maintaining the deck's appearance and functionality.

Whether you can paint over your existing paint depends on what’s on there. Most of the time, you’ll want to sand down or scrape off the paint that’s currently coating your surface. Epoxy paint, for example, won’t let new paint stick to the surface. Latex paint is more forgiving and will accept a new coat, but a primer is recommended if you’re switching colors.
