"Brindley was incredible! I'm not sure I have ever seen anyone as industrious and thorough. He stayed true to his estimate. He prepped the deck, replaced the weather damaged planks and spindles. Everything was done in a timely manner. I could not be more pleased. Photos available."

"Rick was easy to communicate with, either by phone or e-mail. He answered my questions, did research on the project, and was very thorough in attending to the details. He came when he said he would, did the work he said he would, and charged what he said he would. His work area was spotless when he finished. He did an outstanding job for me. I would certainly hire him again."

"They were excellent. My vinyl plank flooring is beautiful and my baseboards and doors are great. Trey and Nina went a step above and cleaned after they were finished. I highly recommend them!"

"Brandon is the owner and he met with my wife and did an excellent job of picking out wonderful bright and vibrant colors for all of the rooms to be painted. 2 days later he sent a "crew" over to the house to do the actual painting. The crew did a very poor job of neatness by splattering paint over many edges of baseboard, ceiling, outlets, and even the floor. We had to call them back the next day for some clean-up and a second coat in 3 rooms. They failed to remove some items from the walls prior to painting and failed to protect some items from getting paint on them. We were not about to call them back a 3rd time , so we ended up doing some clean up and touch up ourselves. Perhaps if Brandon had been more proactive in the actual painting or supervised the crew more diligently we may have enjoyed a more favorable experience. At any rate we felt that for the price we paid we deserved a much more professional job!

"Dan is a good contractor and through. There were learning curves for both Dan and we the homeowners with Monroe County building codes. Dan listen to the inspector and corrected things to ensure they were within code and paid particular attention to the details. With this being covid environment throughout the world it was an impact to the project and caused a bit of delay. We were very satisfied with Dan's work the room turned out excellent,"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.
