"Aaron is an astonishingly conscientious and talented mason. He first repaired our chimney (originally built in 1929), and then rebuilt from scratch our front steps, blending the new bricks seamlessly into the older surrounding walls. His price was fair and, honestly, maybe a bit too low! He’s done a few other odd jobs around the house, always keeping in good communication when he will arrive and what’s needed for the work. I will be hiring him (if he can spare the time!) for any future jobs."

Architects questions, answered by experts

When planning a new build, meet with an architect as your first step. Architects will often work with specific contractors and can ensure the contractor on your project is qualified and experienced to handle your build. Both the architect and the contractor should be involved with the project from the early stages, but the process may be smoother when you start with an architect.

Many architects offer 3D modeling and virtual walkthroughs, which allow clients to visualize the project and make informed decisions before construction begins.

The various types of architects can be broken down into eight distinct categories, but there can be specific specialties within each of them. Most homeowners will work with a residential, restoration, green, interior, landscape, or retrofit architect for projects. There are also lighting and commercial architects whose work is geared more toward large spaces and businesses.

With proper training and experience, reading blueprints is fairly straightforward and not very difficult. If you don’t have the necessary knowledge to interpret the symbols, abbreviations, and other notations used, blueprints may not make sense. Learning to read blueprints can help you understand the construction process and keep you more involved and informed when you’re building a house.

An architect is usually involved in the process of determining the layout and structural features and requirements of the home itself, taking into account the local codes, climate, and materials needed to make the home structurally sound. Architects may communicate more with contractors and subcontractors throughout the building process. In comparison to architects, interior designers typically focus on the aesthetics of a home interior and possibly exterior, helping the homeowner decide on color schemes, textures, and materials to incorporate into the design.
