"Great! Please note that The Chimney Man is now Chimney Man and Son. The current owner trained with the original Chimney Man, who has since retired. I used to use another area service that had been highly rated. However, that business is now being run by a son who no longer thinks it's important to answer calls. In desperation, I looked up other chimney sweeps in the area and luckily picked The Chimney Man and Son. He came out to the property very promptly and gave my chimney the most thorough cleaning it has ever had. I have a wood insert that I use for supplemental heating over the winter, so I do burn a lot more and it's important to me to have a safe system. I was blown away by the attention to detail and to the point by point inspection. I was also blow away by the price. My chimney and firebox were both inspected and cleaned, and I paid $130 for the total service. I will definitely use this service again!"

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

Moss grows in dark areas of roofs, including in corners and gutters. If left alone, it can grow under roofing and cause permanent damage. Here’s how to remove moss from metal roofs

  • Soak the moss to soften it

  • Scrub it away with a soft-bristled brush, or pick it off with your hands (be sure to wear gloves)

  • Use a moss remover that’s compatible with metal roofing, following the manufacturer’s directions

  • Remove dead moss and rinse the roof thoroughly

  • Prevent future moss growth by trimming branches, cleaning gutters, and attaching zinc strips to moss-prone areas

Inspect annually for damage, clean debris, and reapply sealant to maintain protection.

Roof cleaning can damage shingles if it’s done incorrectly—like with a high-power power washer—but it likely won’t damage your roof if you pay to have an expert do the work. A professional roof cleaner will use a gentle cleaning solution and a cleaning method that matches your roof material to ensure the process doesn’t damage the roof. Some homeowners worry that roof cleaning will shorten the life of their roof by removing shingle particles or protective coatings, but it often extends roof life by removing plants that cause damage and improves your home’s curb appeal simultaneously.

Clearing snow from your roof can be a tedious and time-consuming job. Even so, it is extremely important to maintain your roof during the winter months. You can help prevent ice dams and avoid roof collapse.

As a side note, rather than shoveling your roof, you should always use a roof rake to modify the job. Otherwise, call in a professional.

Yes, moss can be dangerous for your roof if left in place to grow without treatment. The moss soaks up and holds moisture. Having a constantly damp roof could lead to problems with rot for the parts of the roof that consist of wood. Additionally, a patch of thick moss may draw insects and birds, which could damage the roof. Thick moss could block the roof’s drainage system. Water then may back up after a rainstorm and cause further damage that could eventually lead to roof repair expenses or the cost of roof replacement.
