Mulch Magic Inc. specializes in mulch installation for playgrounds, municipal areas, and commercial and residential buildings.  We are currently developing a list of park districts, municipalities and HOA management companies that we believe would benefit from our expertise. We are not limited to only mulch as  we offer other services such as terraseeding -  a soil and seed blend which eliminates the use of the seed blankets. We can customize any type of seed for any project such as; sports fields, lawn damage or areas with wild flowers native to the region. This is a one time installation and then begins to grow, if you are familiar with hydroseeding its similar but incredibly more effective and faster results. This leads right into our erosion control services which is perfect for any damage done to hills, slopes, or along roadways (sledding, high foot traffic areas, water erosion.)   This is all possible with our fleet of Express Blower Trucks. Express Blower trucks are relatively new to the Chicagoland area, but are gaining popularity amongst park districts and municipalities. At Mulch Magic, we are eradicating the use of high labor costs so you can spend that money/budget elsewhere. This means no strain on your work force and projects completed in a fraction of the time it has traditionally taken. For example, we can install 500 yards of decorative or playground mulch per day. Depending on the project we can be out in as little as 1 day, this includes complete clean up and customer satisfaction. No more heaping piles that can be an eyesore and potentially stain wherever mulch is stored. I welcome the opportunity to schedule a meeting and go over our services in detail.

"The quality of the work was poor, the sod was laid and not rolled out which is preventing the sod from catching and causing the lawn to look uneven, the grass seed/ dirt was spread sporadically over the front lawn without focusing on the bare spots which was the ultimate goal of the seeding. (for treatment/solution to holes in the lawn to promote grass growth in those areas.) Also there was very little grass seeds or dirt spread to back lawn. I brought this to Kevin's attention and he said he would take care of it and that he ran out of dirt, also his response to my calls or e-mails was not timely or not at all. I called and text him on several occasions requesting that he comes to complete the job and he never showed up to complete the job as promised. I also feel the additional cost he charged ($1500) to lay 4 to 5 rolls of sod for 20 ft. x 24 ft. area (480 sq. ft.) , was over priced and he took advantage of me and I am a victim of price gouging. His initial quote he gave me was 3400 (for the seeding, retainer wall removal, aeration, power raking, cutting the grass, plant 1 bush) but I just noticed he has put 3500 on the contract so even in that instance I paid him $100 more than what was agreed upon. The contract that he wanted me to sign was very extensive and "construction focused" and did not address everything we had discussed for this project. It basically was an agreement to ensure payment and cover himself if I did not pay. When I noticed the contract did not list line by line description of the scope of the work I brought that to his attention and asked him to include what the job would intel ( work order) listing what we had talked about. He told me he would bring it when he came to do the job. I didn't receive anything, but he had already came to to start the job. By the time he finally came to start the job I had received a warning from the village due to my grass had grown more then 5 inches waiting for him to come and take care of cutting the grass when he was to start the project. The overall communication and follow up with this company is not good and they do not provide detailed scope of work orders even when requested."

"I regret ignoring the negative reviews and being influenced by the Angi.com certification for this supplier. I definitely do NOT recommend hiring this supplier for Lawn Care services. This supplier failed to keep multiple commitments, and was a No-Show on multiple occasions. This small supplier lacks professionalism, is not committed to good customer service, does not keep commitments, and is completely unreliable."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Mulch is widely available and affordable. You can find it online or at most local home improvement stores.

The best time to lay mulch depends on the type of mulch and the reason for installing it:

  • Summer: Adding extra mulch helps soil retain moisture and keeps weeds at bay, allowing plants to thrive.

  • Fall: Adding mulch helps control weeds and keeps soil and roots warm during the cooler months. Aim to add a layer of mulch 2 to 4 inches deep.

  • Winter: Mulch around perennial plants to help keep them insulated.

  • Spring: Wait until the ground has thawed. Depending on the thickness, add between 1 and 4 inches of mulch to provide freeze and rain protection and enrich the soil.

Generally, you want the soil for your edible plants to have good drainage, organic matter for nutrients, a loose texture (like loam soil), and a balanced pH level. However, the type of plants you're growing will dictate the exact characteristics your soil needs to thrive. For example, brussels sprout prefers more acidic soil, while broccoli prefers more alkaline soil.

You should use mulch because it protects garden soil in a few key ways. This extra layer between the ground and the elements protects against erosion, helps your soil maintain moisture, regulates changes in temperature, adds nutrients as it decomposes, and keeps weeds at bay.

That depends on the number of cubic feet in each bag. Ten 2-cubic-foot bags of mulch will cover 20 cubic feet, while 10 3-cubic-foot bags of mulch will cover 30 cubic feet. Learning how to DIY mulch can save you money and help you repurpose natural items such as wood chips, pine needles, and leaves.
