"They do a fantastic job, first tree service that doesn't tear up the yard and they actually climb the tree to do the trimming and the I would recommend calling ahead of time, for the reason of them doing work for the whole there availability is tuff and take away to get to your job, but are a great company."

"They were real nice guys what work they did was good...I have one tree out of four that they didn't do at all that needs to be trimmed...the quote i received was for all four trees...yet only three were trimmed properly...the one not touched is hanging with dead branches over the garage....i had to leave while they were here and paid them before i left...trusting them to finish the other trees...not so."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Since summer is a busy time for tree companies, the cheapest time of year to remove a tree is during the winter. February and March are typically the prime time to hire a tree removal pro, and some homeowners living in colder climates can save around 20% off services. It depends on location and the company, but you can always shop around for the best deal.

You can find pruning paints and sealants for trees, but you shouldn’t use them on a topped tree. Coatings like these often inhibit the tree’s healing process. An important exception is if there are dangerous fungi nearby that the tree is particularly vulnerable to, like oaks and oak wilt. Sealing cuts can help prevent fungi from taking root.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

Many species, especially when well-established, are not fans of transplantation. You’ll need to decide if you want to risk splashing the cash, understanding that transplantation isn’t always successful. Again, this is where hiring a pro is helpful, as they can give you all the essential info you need to ensure your tree stands a fighting chance.

Hiring an arborist costs around $900 on average, with prices ranging from $250 to $2,500 or more. Some arborists charge an hourly rate, typically between $100 and $350 per hour. The final cost depends on several factors, including the type of work, the number of trees, accessibility, and whether you hire an independent arborist or a larger tree service company. When hiring, you should also consider their experience and insurance coverage.

Below are some estimated costs for common arborist jobs:

  • Small tree removal: $300 to $500

  • Large tree removal: $500 to $2,000 or more

  • Tree health assessment: $150

  • Trimming a small tree: $75 to $200

  • Trimming a large tree: $150 to $400

  • Dealing with invasive species: $150 to $1,000 or more
