Yes, barndominiums can have basements. Barndominiums are typically built over concrete slabs, so barndo basements are not very common. However, it is possible to include a basement in a barndominium blueprint as long as you’re building completely from scratch. Barndos can have the same types of basements as traditional homes, including full or walk-out basements.

You should plan on waiting at least a year and ideally two to three years after construction before finishing your basement. This will give the foundation time to settle in response to the weight of your home and the expansion of the surrounding soil. You can then repair your foundation and seal any cracks as needed before finishing it to reduce your risk of future leaks or other issues.

Walkout basements are not generally included in a home’s square footage, although they may be if they meet certain conditions that depend on local regulations. A finished walkout basement used as a living space may be counted toward square footage in some locations as long as all codes for livable space are met.

In most cases, a contractor will ask you for a deposit that is a percentage of the total cost of your job, but you should never pay in full before work has begun. The up-front cost could be as much as 50%, or you might give a contractor as little as 10% up front. Discuss payment terms with your contractor before they begin the job to avoid surprises.

Basements with persistent moisture problems or flooding shouldn’t be finished until the moisture issues have been fixed.
