"On 25 August 2022 I contracted Color Me Beautiful to paint the interior of my home with the exterior added later. I paid almost $30,000. Each of the 2 projects was projected to take 1-2 weeks. The trim and doors throughout the inside of my home were to be sanded and repaired. The tape on the ceilings that was peeling and was to be replaced before painting. Before the end of August Mr. Epperson had already lost the key to the front door. I gave him the only remaining key and just used the garage door myself. On 17 September I attempted to enter my home through the garage and the door from the garage to the home was locked. He would not answer his phone or bring the key. I was forced to cause damage to my home by breaking into it. I moved in 8 October & I was up at 7:00 am every day to workout, shower, and be dressed before they were due to arrive at 9:00 am. They rarely if ever showed up on time, sometimes not bothering to come or contact me for weeks at a time. I repeatedly ask about finishing my closets. I also asked about the tape still peeling from the ceilings and all the damage on my trim all of which had just been painted over instead of being addressed and then painted. He continued to assure me that they painted it first to better see exactly what needed attention. None of those issues ever got revisited and I ended up painting my own closets. After 2 months of paper covering all my back windows knowing the main reason I purchased this home was the view they finally came to remove it but never removed the sun caked tape residue. On 2 December I come home from work to find my garage door left open and paint in my brand-new toilet. It was their habit to clean their gear in my 2 tubs one of which is a jetted soaker tub and my sinks 3 of which were brand new. They did not clean those out either. I have a septic system which caused their washout to back up. After having previous plumbing issues addressed with the replacement of the toilets and vanities this caused me to spend even more to have a plumber come back to blow out my lines. They also left paint and supplies strewn about my yard in below freezing weather and snow which I brought inside. Throughout this entire almost 5 months he demanded payments while making promises he refused to keep knowing I was retired from the Navy, new to the area, and all alone out here. There was even a time when I attempted to address all the issues I was having with them not showing up and the quality of work being performed with Mr. Epperson where he called me and proceeded to start yelling at me. When I hung up to avoid the confrontation, he called his employee and put him in the middle asking him to give me the phone and again a screaming match ensued. When they finally packed up and left on 17 January nothing was completed to my satisfaction. All my walls are still see-thru and 2 toned, anywhere the 2 different grays meet on the outside of my house are a mess with no clear definition. The stone wall out front only got the face of it painted, all the sides of the stone were still the original color. The foundation was still see-thru along with all the white trim both inside and out. The siding only got the face painted as well. There was overspray everywhere including my brand-new light fixtures, brand-new floors, and master bath vanity mirror. Almost all the interior trim had paint from the walls and runs throughout the white. The bottoms of the windows never got painted because they just painted them closed. The areas on my walls and ceilings that got repaired were not retextured. I am not a professional painter but I know that most colors require either primer or several coats of paint and yet he repeatedly asked for more funds because he did not “expect it to take so many coats” when no primer was used. His only responses since they packed up and left were to ask me for a punch list for them to address which I sent more than once. Since then, Mr. Epperson has only ignored any attempt I have made to get this corrected."

Basement remodels FAQs

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Replacing carpet or other flooring

  • Adding heating and cooling

  • Adjusting or adding walls and doors

  • Altering or adding plumbing elements

If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.

The cost to finish a basement is $18,400 for the average homeowner. However, this cost could be as little as $2,800 or as much as $34,500, depending on the basement size and the materials needed. If your basement is already outfitted with electrical and plumbing, expect the cost to fall on the lower end.

For example, the drywall cost for this project averages around $1,750, but other features, like hiring a plumber, cost between $45 and $200 per hour.

The cost to remodel a basement is between $12,100 and $33,400 for the average homeowner. The price you pay can be as little as $3,500 or as much as $50,200, depending on the size and condition of your basement and the type of remodel you're doing.

If you're doing a simple project like adding a home office to your basement, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $3,000. However, if you're adding a bathroom, which is an extensive project, you can expect to pay between $6,600 to $16,500.

Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:

  • Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel

  • Installing light fixtures yourself

  • Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones

  • Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary

Although homeowners often use the terms basement remodeling and basement finishing interchangeably, they are quite different terms.

Finishing a basement is the process of taking a basement space that is not habitable and adding elements to make it usable. This includes adding plumbing, flooring, and insulation.

Remodeling a basement means taking an already existing finished basement and changing it, often by adding or removing walls, adding plumbing, or changing the existing flooring.
