"I really appreciate the work The Deckman did on our deck. This was for a family home that we use for vacations and holidays, and I was only there for a week. Tony was able to assess the job right away, come back the next day to scrape, repair, and clean it, and stain it the following day. It looks great! Tony was very responsive and friendly. I also appreciate that he masked up whenever we spoke face-to-face, which is very important to me. It was not cheap to get this done, but you get what you pay for! I will definitely hire The Deckman again if he is available."

"He kept in touch via email, they kept the yard relatively clean during the two days it took to install the fence, they were there when they said they'd be there, they were done when they said they'd be done, and they were super friendly and professional. I would DEFINTELY use them again, and in fact, we're saving up for some repairs and winterizing -- handyman type stuff that we're not good at -- and I'll call them for sure!"

"Mike did a fabulous job. The steps look better than any of the previous incarnations. We usually have to replace the steps every 5-6 years, but these feel so solid I doubt we will have to have them replaced again for a long time. Mike is a great problem solver, and came with great designs to make them not only solid but attractive."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

You can add a roof to most decks, but you need to have it inspected first. If your deck didn’t come with a roof initially, it may not be able to handle the weight without some structural changes. You can add additional supports to your existing deck to safely add a roof, and tying your deck’s roof to an exterior wall can help add some structural stability, but remember these aren’t DIY projects and need to be left to a pro.

It is possible to pressure wash your deck, but it’s usually best to leave the work to a professional for two main reasons. First, power washers are expensive, and you can avoid high upfront costs by hiring a deck washing pro instead. Second, you must be careful to use the correct setting to avoid damaging your deck material. You can only clean soft woods like pine with a wide spray and a low pressure; otherwise, the water will leave unpleasant marks on your deck. Hard woods, composite material, and metal can stand up to increasingly higher water pressures.

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

Pressure-treated decking may be worth it if you want a natural, insect- and rot-resistant decking material that will last for decades with proper maintenance. As such, it’s a much better option than untreated pine. Alternative wood decking materials like cedar and redwood tend to be less durable and more expensive. Some homeowners prefer composite decking, which is a low-maintenance alternative to wood but is also more costly.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.
