"At first I received two quotes, 1 from Aspen Fence and 1 from Golden Fence. In hind site I should have used Golden Fence. (sorry Golden Fence)
I picked Aspen Fence because their proposal looked to be more professional, so I justified the extra $250 that they were because of that.
The problem was that I had two gates on the project and Golden Fence included 4x6 posts on BOTH gates and Aspen didn't include any  larger posts on either gate. I spoke with Jeff at Aspen and he wanted to charge me extra for adding the larger posts and I had to twist his arm to up-size the posts at ONE gate for no extra charge.
Then Jeff called me 12 hours before his guys were going to show up and asked me if I got the permit when I was under the impression he was getting the permit so I had to pay extra for that and I had to pull favor with the village to expidite it thru the system.
Then when the guys showed up the asked my wife "where do you want us to put the dirt from the holes". WHAT??? Since when does a contractor give you a price to make holes and a mess and ask you where to put the spoils? I've been in construction and construction project management for 30+ years, I've NEVER had a contractor ask me where to put the trash and spoils they generate. You make it you take it! So I called Jeff to ask him his thought on that and he said "well we never take the dirt away, we usually spread it around the property where the customer wants it". He told me he would charge me extra to take the dirt away ($7/hole) and I had something like 22 holes so he wanted to charge me another $150 to take his trash away.
I informed him he should've spelled that out on his quote and he said I was the first to have a problem with it.
Needless to say I wasn't blown away with the whole "Aspen experience" and I would caution anyone considering using them. If you're getting a bid from them NAIL THEM DOWN IN WRITING about EVERYTHING!!!! Time, duration, drawings, details, permits, spoils, layout........
The workmanship was fine and they did come back out to fix some things free of charge but I just wanted to share my experience.

"I purchased the $99 Big Deal for 3 hours of handyman work back when they were called HomeDM Remodeling.  Our front door was starting to sag and not latch properly and I wanted assistance helping to re-square it and to replace an poorly installed and horribly leaking exterior door in our dining room.  I'm moderately handy around the house and thought I would help with the re-leveling of the front door prior to his arrival so I removed the screen door.  Turns out it was not necessary and I actually wasted time.  What I thought would take well over an hour took about 5 minutes to fix.  He removed the mounting screws on the hinge side and used a long crow bar to lift that side of the frame up about 3/4 of an inch.  We used my table saw to cut a custom shim to hold it in place before re-installing the mounting screws.  He clearly knows his business and the tricks of the trade!  I was allowed to help out with getting the previously removed screen door reattached.  We then spent the rest of the time removing a horrible exterior door and installing a previously purchased one.  We can, once again, eat in our dining room without baking in the summer and freezing in the winter!

Mat Bujak came out to give an estimate an hour later than stated time.  Then on the day he was to start work, did not show up or call.  I understand that it was raining, but he should have called to reschedule.  When he finally came out, he was an hour late again.  He performed the work rather quickly and didn't clean up very well.  Also, there was a part of the door that he had to come back for and left a gap so when it started raining, the rain came into the house.  He did come back to finish the work and was more timely this time around, but the overall workmanship was not quality.  The painting on the baseboard was very sloppy as well.

Update 1 year later:  the door frame part that was replaced is starting to come apart already.  Will probably need someone to redo the job soon.  Better to pay more and get it done right.  Pretty disappointed as this was my first time working with a contractor on Angie's list.
