Of all the contractors we dealt with, James and his crew certainly were among the best if not the best, for communication, professional skill, and devotion to finishing the project right. Where there were (understandable) obstacles he let us know of possible delays and outcomes, he brought the job to where it passed county inspection, and where any problem cropped up he came back and made things work. He worked well with other contractors present on the site, including being careful to clean up post-job. Yes, adding wiring for a ceiling fan where there is none requires an electrician to build the electrical infrastructure. You should not attempt to do this job yourself, as electrical work can be dangerous without experience. All told, the job is a big one, and it might cost up to $2,000.

Manufacturers of ceiling fan-rated boxes must indicate on the box that the unit is for that purpose. To check your model, remove the light fixture and look inside the box for wording that says it’s rated for fan use. If you don’t see words saying so, it likely needs to be replaced with an appropriate one that is rated for use with a ceiling fan.

Installation generally takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the home structure, electrical characteristics, and attic access ease.

If the fan doesn’t have a switch, connect the white wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan; connect the green wire to the ground wire; connect both black wires; and connect both blue wires.
