Gutters are a basic necessity for homes in order to keep water from pooling around your house and damaging the exterior. Aluminum gutters can be seamed or seamless. A seamed gutter system comes in pieces that can be joined together for easy installation. A more expensive alternative is a seamless gutter that's part of a custom fascia-style system that doesn't have gaps. A seamless system is generally considered better for preventing clogs, leaks, and cracking.

If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.

While gutter guards come in various materials and grades, stainless steel mesh gutter guards are generally considered the best type of gutter guard due to their durability and effectiveness. The mesh prevents most debris from entering the gutter. It's also much longer lasting and easier to clean than gutter guards made with other materials.

A full gutter system, or even a full gutter replacement , costs homeowners an average of around $1,200 . This is a very rough number based on the average-sized home with a typical roof build, using vinyl gutters. This average also assumes the roof is in good condition, as you can’t hang new gutters on a rotting or sloping roof. Factors that increase cost are metal gutters, larger homes, and unique gutter styles.
