Oxidation is what causes copper to turn green. This oxidation is called a patina or verdigris, and in general, the process can take a few years. Gutter guards can effectively reduce debris buildup and minimize maintenance, but if you don't get the right type for your house, you can run into issues. Some types of guards can clog with small debris like pine needles, which require occasional cleaning. High-quality guards may be expensive, and improper installation can impact water flow. Certain guards may not perform well in heavy rain, causing water to overshoot the gutter.

When cleaning gutters, your pressure washer shouldn’t exceed a pressure rating range of 1,500 and 1,800 psi. Remember—gutters are designed to withstand the pressure of heavy rain and not much else. While the force of the water in a pressure washer will get rid of the dirt and debris, too much force can damage your gutters and, if you’re not careful, your house. A high PSI will have you prepped to call a professional when your gutter leaks. It could also mess up the gutter joints or even blow the tiles off of your roof.

If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.
