For a smooth and long-lasting finish, opt for an 100 percent acrylic, semi gloss latex self-leveling paint. There are many brands and types of paint to choose from, so do research before deciding which one is best for your project. Some paints even have qualities that might save you time. For example, some paints have primer so you can skip priming separately and start painting right away. 

Solid wood is a durable and attractive option for cabinet doors that holds up well against a small amount of moisture. However, solid wood doors will expand and contract, meaning upkeep will be necessary if painted. Particleboard with veneer cabinet doors are cost-effective and can be attractive. MDF cabinet doors offer excellent and predictable workability features. However, both of those options are vulnerable to damage if water finds its way through the veneer or paint finish. 

There are a few different types of paints that you can use on cabinets—latex, acrylic, and oil-based. Most cabinet painters choose latex, but acrylic paints are also a great choice. In addition to the type of paint, you also need to select a finish. Matte finishes tend to be less durable, whereas semi-gloss or high-gloss options are better for highly-used cabinets. 

It’s important to note that regular wall paint does not adhere to cabinets correctly—you’ll need cabinet-specific paint. 

It’s a good idea to give your cabinets a quick once-over every week. Every six months or so, you may want to double down on the elbow grease and give the exteriors a more thorough wipe down. Additionally, you'll probably need to pull out all the stops once a year to really deep clean the interior. If you’re not too keen on the idea of cleaning your own kitchen cabinets, you can always hire a house cleaner near you to tackle it for you. They’ll have the expertise to make sure every cabinet is spotless.

There should be at least 30 inches of space between the top of the stove, whether gas or electric, and the bottom of any upper cabinets. This typically provides enough clearance to prevent heat damage and meet most building code requirements. If you’re installing a range hood, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. It may require even more space.
