Stucco’s lifespan can be shortened by improper application, incorrectly mixed material, lack of preparation before application, and lack of maintenance. For the standard three-coat stucco system, six days are dedicated solely to stucco drying timelines, which are necessary after each coat.

Stucco will dry in two to three days, but you should wait one to two months to allow it to cure fully before you paint it. The curing process is slow, but leaving the material exposed to air and natural moisture will help it reach its maximum strength. If you live in a hot, arid climate, wait a month before painting. Wait two months before painting if you live in a more moderate or wet climate.

The decision to repair or replace stucco depends on the extent of the damage. If the culprit is dirt, stains, or small cracks, your stucco will benefit from a deep clean, quick repair, and possibly a paint job. If you notice large cracks or peeling, it’s time to call a professional to fix your stucco. They can guide you in deciding whether your issue is simple enough to repair or whether severe problems—like water damage and mold—require removing and replacing sections of your stucco, or the entire thing.
