"I hired Sean to clean off a vacant lot and trim shrubbery along the fence line. I had called several companies but they all had excuses or did not return my call. Sean answered my call and showed up to discuss the job. He thoroughly cleaned the lot and hauled off all of the debris. He was very courteous and explained each step of the operation. The lot looks great and I highly recommend Sean to anyone needing any kind of landscaping or work requiring heavy machinery. He restored my faith in decent contractors who not out there to rip you off."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

There are several different factors that influence how long it takes to excavate. For a foundation, it could take anywhere from three days to three weeks. It can take even longer if you face weather-related delays or an inaccessible site that’s riddled with boulders and rough terrain. It may also take longer if you have clay soil, which is more difficult to dig.

The cost to drill a well varies, with a national average of around $5,500 for a 150-foot well. However, prices can fluctuate significantly based on several factors, including your location, the required well depth, geological conditions, local regulations, and the specific drilling methods used. For the most accurate cost assessment, it is best to research and get quotes from local well-drilling professionals in your area.

The easier way to find buried sprinkler lines is to use the plan from the professionals who installed the system. If you don’t have professional plans, listen for running water on your lawn when you turn on the system. You may also spot wet areas, giving you an idea of where the heads are. Once you find the sprinkler heads, you’ll likely be able to connect the dots between them, revealing the system below.

Most professional excavation teams will charge between $8 and $15 per cubic yard. Calculate the cost by finding the volume of your pool—width x length x depth—and dividing it by 27. Then, multiply the price by the cubic yards from your equation. Budget for complications like a rocky lawn, hard-to-access pool area, or high local labor prices.

Most residential basements are 8 to 10 feet deep. You can dig deeper depending on building codes, but it does become more difficult. You’ll likely need to install stronger foundation walls and additional supports to handle the increased load. Depending on the water table, you may also need a water management system. Clay soil can support a deeper foundation than sandy soil. A structural engineer will be able to tell you the maximum, feasible depth.
